Possible steering rack failure

MY2016 F82, 7000 miles on the clock and its developed a clicking noise when turning. took it into the dealers today and the head Tech is pretty sure its the steering rack thats failed. They are awaiting confirmation and authorisation from germany before changing the part as its a £2500 part!

anyone else had a steering rack failure on such a low mileage car?

im not sure how this happens, ive not hit any big pot holes or anything that im aware of. just the usual sideways MDM driving but not on anything thats not flat and made of tarmac!

Ill update thread tomorrow when i hear back from the dealer. For now im sporting a lovley alpine white 1 series for the night

My steering rack has been changed for noise on small bumps from left front end. Didn't help at all. 30k km on the clock. My SA doesn't know what to do next. I have extra issues: steering wheel shaking at 130 km/h and car steering right by itself. Geometry OK, wheels perfect balanced. I'm not happiest person in the world.

Keep us updated jimboo. The clicking sound could also be a rear axle issue. Perhaps the clicking is coming from the rear of the car? Do you have aftermarket wheels?

Nope all standard with mperformance parts. It's coming from the front. You can actually make it click by turning the wheel when stationary. From wheels straight 50% of full right lock clicks once then again when you turn it back to straight. Same when turning left. If your driving it clicks with each wheel rotation when you are at around 50% of full lock. Mainly happens on roundabouts etc.. I click all the way round kind of sounds like there is a stone in the tyre.

I'll update this tomorrow when I have it confirmed or not

That sounds like a right old pain in the arse I hope mine doesn't go that way. Hope you get to the bottom of it

Wonder if this is similar to the wheel bearing issue on the F10?

got the car back today after almost a week with BMW! steering rack replaced and the noise has gone so I'm assuming that was the issue.

changed the rears to MPSS while i was there so i now have 4 tyres that should have been on the car in the first place. No more crappy continentals for me!!

so 10 days on and the noise has come back again. sending it to another dealer to sort this time, the one i bought the car from as they seem to be better all round for customer service, keeping me informed etc..
not sure if its the steering rack that was at fault originally as i cant see another one breaking within 400 or so miles!
its going in on Tuesday 30th August, ill keep you guys informed as to the verdict once theyve had a look at it.

on a side note the MPSS are awesome in comparison to the contis. grip is sooo much better.

We are almost identical, steering wheels shake above 120km/h and car slowly steering to the right, wheels balance check, alignment check, still have no clue.

Got the car back yesterday and they think it's the wheel bearing rather than the rack so replaced that. So far so good and noise has gone. Fingers crossed.

Just curious if you ever figured out what this was. I have the same issue but it's only when stationary and when going very slowly in reverse when full turn/rotation. Otherwise, I don't hardly ever notice it. I really only began noticing it because I had the music off and windows down. It's very faint.

Did you manage to find the solution?
