Thanks Jockey. Went to install the Power stop Z23 pads and noticed that the tabs on the top of the pads are much larger. When installed, they rub on the caliper. Is this right?

Hmmm... had mine installed a couple of weeks ago and I didn't seem to notice that size was an issue.

I used a dremel to remove the tabs. They actually rubbed on my 18" winter wheels.

I had Z16s for 900 miles and they went from screeching in reverse while cold to LOUDLY screeching at every stop. They also glazed my rotors.

After contacting Powerstop, they graciously sent me a replacement set. I then installed them extra carefully (with anti-squeal also) to eliminate user error and bedded them exactly as they instructed.

For the first 500 miles, they only squeaked in the mornings. But now that the weather has gotten warmer, they are starting to squeak intermittently when slowly approaching a stop. While I love how my wheels stay significantly cleaner, I'm pretty disappointed overall. Not to mention pedal feel and modulation is worse than stock.

I'd like to try the Z23s but I'm really skeptical about them based on my experience with the Z16s. I'm curious if people are still happy with the Z23s overall.

Curious, what are the big silver tabs for? One of mine broke off during the install and was going to call power stop and order another set, i figure they must be there for a reason.

Those that remove the dampening weights will suffer pulsations and more noise. Mine are bone quiet...they only screech when the car is parked after it rained or I wash it and is allowed to dry and rust over. It sounds like your wringing a cats neck for the first couple of pulses then gone. Mine have been wonderfully quiet

I wanted to make a thread specifically on the Power Stop ceramic brake pads along with some basic information.

INFORMATION

Those that have the standard F8X brakes know that the OEM pads produce an obscene amount of brake dust that gets caked onto the wheels. For those that have done the pad swap, please feel free to contribute reviews and thoughts!

I noticed it says the sensor wires are not included. Do you need new ones when you change out the pads, or can you reuse the old ones?

You reuse the old ones. There is one for the front and one for the rear.

So how are these pads so far for people that has them. Do they fit correctly. They cover the entire surface of the rotors and not leave the edge lip out. Are they harsh on the surface of the rotors. Any squeaks present?

I can chime in on squeaks...

At first the squeaks didn't bother me. It only happened in the morning while backing the car out of the garage. But as time when on it really started to bother me as they would also let out with blood-curdling howls in the parking structure at work and would last until I exited out to the street. I was tempted to go back to the stock pads.

I’m impressed with mine so far, with a couple of caveats. They seem to be inconsistent in colder temps. Pedal feel mainly and secondary bite not quite there. Also they are now rattling around like a good thing when cold and reversing out of the drive, mainly rears. Occasional squeaks but nothing major.

Love the zero dust though! 666’s stay clean forever!

If these pads squeaks and rattle this bad I would rather just use the stocks pads and deal with the brake dust over annoying squeaks. My last car was squeaking bad when the weather got colder so I eventually just went back to the stock pads after going through three other sets.

I've tried several different brands over the years in my past bimmers. Every pad will have its pros and cons but in the end I always end up with OEM pads. I came to accept the fact that having dusty brakes is part of the BMW ownership. I'd rather deal with brake dust rather than dealing with poor initial bite, inconsistent / soft brake pedal or noisy brakes.

Besides, you get what you pay for. Even for my E36, decent Jurid OEM brake pads cost around $60-70 for a set.

I see that these are $40 per axle, and have fitment issues. They might be fine for normal driving but I'm sure there is a reason why OEM F80 brake pads cost $250 per set. They spent millions in R&D when developing brakes and I don't need to go thru trial and error again.

I really don't under what fitment issues everybody is having. In the past I used Z16's on my 128, M235 & M4 with zero fitment issues and some cold temp squeaking at the first application and while backing up. Now i just installed Z23's on the M2 so will see how they work. The Z23's are of the original design not the new ones that we are waiting on with the smaller damper weight

One note if the dampening weights touch the caliper when you install them just lightly tap the opposite corner and re align it. They are riveted tightly to the pad ear and can be ever so slightly moved. They should fit just fine. The only struggles i ever have is getting that damn wear sensor into the pad slot

The pads usually don't have the in your face initial bite that the M pads do but you get used to it after awhile....

Wish someone would research what pad composition the M pads use....

6month and 5k miles on f/r set of z23’s. Zero complaints. The squeak is present for the first application of the brakes in the am but after that its dead silent. The rattle is there (ever so slightly) when going from forward to reverse, however its not bothersome.

My issue with my dct car with the factory pads was the initial bite, it was way too aggressive for a street pad imho, with the z23, its not as aggressive and I feel as if the brake pedal modulation is smoother than w the stock pads. Minimal dust is a big plus as well

I recently purchased a 2018 F80 M3 and immediately did not like the amount of brake dust on the wheels. I consulted Dave Zeckhausen at www.zeckhausen.com for recommendations. I have been purchasing brake pads from Dave since 2002. Dave recommended Hawk 5.0 pads (details below). Install was straightforward. I will point out that the anti-vibration/noise reduction ears or whatever they are called are much larger than stock. No matter, when the pins are inserted the stand-off from the caliper is fine. There is no contact with the caliper. Follow the typical bedding instructions. I have 600 miles on the pads. There is no squeal and hardly any brake dust at all even after several periods of driving in wet weather. Bite is as good as stock. I highly recommend these pads.
