F8x M Performance Splitter and Lip DIY

Hey folks. I installed this earlier in the year and documented it as I went through the painstaking process. Finally had time to put a guide together as I don't believe one exists today.

I actually had my buddy mdefalco25 go through the installation yesterday on his new M3. When I did this initially while following the BMW instructions it took me roughly 8 hours to complete. mdefalco25 was able to get this done in just under 2 1/2 hours with this guide and a helping hand.

Im keeping this as a PDF so that you can download the guide and print it out if need be. Click here:

KHATTI's DIY for M Performance Splitter and Lip Install

BMW OEM M Performance Instructions

If anyone would like to contribute to this (if I missed something or want to add more detail) just let me know and I will update it.

Good luck to those of you who want to DIY this!

Brilliant. I posted a half-baked one some time ago, but it's about time. Thanks for your contribution.

One problem I ran into was that after installing the support bracket, I covered everything back up only to find out later in the process that the two center support screws that attach the lip core to the support bracket couldn't catch the support bracket thread. I had to therefore uninstall everything, shift the support bracket a bit and then I was good to go. One way to mitigate this would have been to do a test fit of those two screws before reinstalling the oil cooler cover and bumper screws. I also did mine on jack stands and my neck was extremely sore by the end of it all.

I would like to say a massive thank you to you KHATTI your guide was amazing it got me the whole way through in great time. I didn't need to take off the wheels as a spanner did the job.

The dremal is a must have tool for adjusting the splash guards but i didnt have googles so used my RayBans which was a fail on my part lol one thing and this is really me picking here as it was a perfect guide but before putting the oil guard back i put in the 2 bolts from Pack 1 in place to make sure that the alignment remained while i was fitting and bending all the bumper bits in place.

Thanks again really saved me a lot of money i would have wasted on getting someone i dont trust to fit this. Even with me not being a regular or trying this before i took my time paid attention to detail which im sure someone else would not have done.

What a great DIY guide. I used this yesterday and it helped tremendously so I can't thank you enough KHATTI! The only thing i would warn people of is the rivet guns that are available at Harbor Freight. They a sell a super cheap one that says on the package that it will work with plastic rivets but it DOES NOT work. The package is a little misleading saying it works with plastic which may be true but not plastic rivets. I bought the wrong one and had to make a second trip which was pretty annoying!

If you buy this one http://www.harborfreight.com/hand-ri...ets-97757.html it works perfect! It also comes with some extra poly rivets which could be handy down the road. Feel free to add this link to the DIY if you would like.

Anyone not use beta link on the OEM front splitters? I used 3m double sided tape and one week later still holding strong.

Neither are necessary if you install the lower lip. There are plenty of screws that hold it in place so beta link or 3M tape need need not apply.

Yeah I didn't use anything on mine. Even before i installed the lip the single screw keeps that thing really snug. FWIW I installed both on the same day so i don't have any real world experience with just using the single screw, I just know it was pretty damn secure.

Is there a preference in which 3m double sided tape I should use i.e. 10lb, 20lb, 30lb support? If there's a certain 3m tape that I should be using, please do let me know! Thank you in advance.

No tape needed if installing lip as well as carbon splitters. There's plenty of screws that secure it to bumper.

Great DIY - much better than BMW's instructions. Thank you! I installed mine today with no issues. It was less of a project than I was expecting.

Awesome write up. Huge help. Couple questions. What are these screws for, and (if they're extra) what do you think about using them in place of the rivets?

Also, did I miss it, or did you just not use bag 4?

Bag 4 is towards the end of install. They're kind of a pain and not overly important. They go towards the edge of the lip near the wheels. In theory, they catch on something as you screw into them to give a tighter fit.

Sorry, realized this was a dumb question after I finished the install. Thought you had to drill holes for all of the rivets.

Those screws did not get used in my install though. Are they for the other parts mentioned in the BMW install instructions I wonder?
