6MT Clutch Chatter
I searched and didn't find any threads on this. So I'm guessing it's not too common.
My 6MT has developed clutch chatter. Anyone else have this? I think it's worse in sport plus than in efficient. Does this mean something is up with my clutch? Car has 13k miles and is not beat on. Thanks

I have a little clutch chatter on my 18 F80 6MT as well. I just turned 22k yesterday. Mine will do it any mode and has done so since I picked up the car with 18k miles. Mine is not beat on at all, as well.
I'm curious as to what some have to say, as it I keep thinking something is wrong as well. |

The dual-mass flywheel has 2 discs connected by springs. Maybe a spring went. Post a vid of the noise.

I've been around manuals all my life and unfortunately I bought a DCT to see what the fuss is all about.
Question; When you press the clutch in does the noise stop and resumed when you let it back out at idle? Are you having issues engaging gears 1-2 or reverse? Could be a few things here but need to narrow down the noise. Most of the time your usual suspect is the TOB goes bad from time to time and mileage has no effect, second your pilot bearing and third is gear rattle, fourth input shaft bearing and last the DMF. I highly doubt its your DMF as you said you drive gently. Please give a better explanation on where the rattle starts, cold or hot or AC on/off or in gear.

Typical TOB engagement/disengagement, I wouldn't worry about it.
Try bleeding the clutch with fresh fluid and see if it helps.

Thank you, wasn't sure if it was an issue as I have not heard it on other MT cars I've owned. Glad it is a normal sound.

I have a similar thing where I get chatter but goes away when I press the clutch and comes back after depressing the clutch in neutral. Not a massive chatter but noticeable enough.
2018 with only 13K miles as well. Any other thoughts on whether this should be further looked at? |

Just pay a little closer attention to your engagement area of clutch and chatter. If it changes over time you may have a tired TOB or pilot bearing. Keep in mind your pedal feel will change a bit with disk wear (point of engagement). Never keep you clutch engaged at a light, only engaging to roll or change gears. I have an IS250 manual for daily duties and still on original clutch at 175k but its getting a little tired lol.

I also just meant clutch chatter (not a noise as much as it feels like the car/engine is shaking a bit when engaging the clutch into first gear. No other issues between gears.
My only other gripe about the manual is the loss in boost when shifting fast, but I've heard many people complain about that.

Does this happen if you don't apply any gas and let the car "walk" when you clutch out? Do you have a tune, and is rev-match turned on or off?

I'll have to check if it happens with clutch engaging, without gas. Yes, I have BM3 Stage 1 with rev-match on for Sport-Plus mode.

Letting us know how Walk engages should indicate if anything might've broken or not. First gear Walk should smoothly auto-rev a tiny bit for engagement and then roll you about 3-5mph...smooth as butter. Is this issue only in Sport+ or all modes? (I help you work through this initial investigation but we may need other clutch/trans experts to chime in. It depends on your responses.)

If you are depressing the clutch in, and sound goes away, just to have it return after clutch pedal is released, then it's relatively normal throw out bearing noises. Should be some minor noise but not too noticeable. All cars i've owned have had some kind of throw out bearing noise but this car is actually pretty quiet (6mt). If it's extremely loud then there may be an issue.

When I said "chattering" I did NOT mean noise, but rather shaking. The car stutters a bit as I'm engaging the clutch into first gear. There is no noise at all.

I've developed a little bit of shake after 45k miles if I engage first with to little gas. Happens in reverse too. Mine doesn't feel like a problem, maybe just some wear after 25K miles of my driving.

Its a sign that your clutch PP/disk is getting tired, stop sending it

Anyhow, the issue is intermittent. I had no chatter today with and without using gas when engaging first, in both sport and sport plus. I'll keep trying and updating.
