An aluminum hood being replaced with steel is not even in the same ballpark.

It's called perception and if they replaced them with Aluminum there's not one person who would know the difference on or off track without a visual inspection. If an aluminum one were a better replacement, that's what I would've wanted.

I contacted my dealer about the recall and they said I need to bring my car in for them to scan my key to order the part. Then it can take up to 5 days for them to receive the part. I don't feel comfortable leaving my car with them for 5 days and asked if I can bring it by for them to order the part and then bring it back again when the part arrives, but they said no. Looks like they'll need it for at least a week.

Mine was ordered over the phone through the VIN number and they told me to bring it in once it arrived at the dealer

Got mine replaced. Took 3 days. I came in for normal service, they sent the part over night and took 2 days to replace it with a new CF shaft. Overall it was in the shop for 3 days.

Just got the shaft replaced at SF Bmw. It took three days had to wait a day for the cf part to arrive and some day for the adhesive to cure.

I'm scheduled for May 7th. I've asked out of curiosity what the part # is.

I got this response from my service rep. Getting mine replaced on May 3rd.

"So I emailed my BMW rep and he said the new drive shafts are no longer carbon fiber. The reason why they we're breaking was due to the flexibility that carbon fiber has, as they age they have more play and they would hit underneath the car eventually leading to them breaking. The new ones are going to be steel, they had more issues with them on the M3 than the M4 so the M3's are available right now but the M4's won't be ready until next month or the following."

A well-known online BMW parts dealer is selling this part number for $745.99, and the description suggests it’s carbon fiber.

I’m really curious to see if it’s actually steel. The explanation is a little far-fetched.

Ya. I'm not totally buying it either. My hope is that it is steel and the added weight helps with the spin out in low gear. I'm probably in the minority here.

My dealer did the repair on my car last week. I had to leave it overnight and they replaced it with another carbon fiber drive shaft...

Just had my service done at BMW Mountain View. They needed my key to order the part. Brought my car back the next week and it took them ~3 days. One of those days was letting it sit overnight — I guess to let the adhesive cure?

They aren't building the driveshafts on site. They should be bolting them in. Mine to about 3 hours from the time I dropped it off.
