PSA: Maintenance Refresh For Purchasing Pre-Owned 2017+

Just a PSA for all those purchasing a pre-owned vehicle from a dealer, whether it be CPO or a used car on the lot, in the MY2017 and newer.

The maintenance refresh is for 3y,36k from the in service date. When purchasing a used car, there are 2 options for refresh.

301 - SH Refresh
302 - MP

The 301 - SH Refresh is $100 MSRP, and it gives you basic maintenance like oil changes, filters, etc.

The 302 - MP is an additional $600 MSRP and it increases maintenance coverage to include brakes, rotors, and wipers.

Some dealers who don't have lots of experience will sell you the 301 for more money and tell you that it includes everything. Its also not safe to assume that if you tell them you want the '700$ refresh' that they will give you both.

I'm dealing with a regional dealer right now because when I bought the car, I told them I want the full refresh at $700. So they decided to sell me the 301 refresh @ $700 and profit $600.

Don't be like me and have to deal with this shit afterwards. If you want basic refresh, pay the $100. If you want brakes, rotors and wipers, pay the $700

If there only real difference between the two is the coverage of brakes and wipers than the $100 version seems like a no brainer. The odds of needing new brakes while under the maintenance coverage period are extremely remote.

Unless you track your car... Then that possibilty becomes very real instantly.

I'm in the process of purchasing a 2015 BMW with around 39,000 miles from an individual. He had purchased the extended maintenance plan. The dealer has mentioned this $700 fee to transfer that will give me coverage for 100,000 miles or until May of 2021. The dealer mentioned it needing brakes, so we WILL be using the more expensive plan. How do I make sure I get what I'm needing? What is this plan called? This is all new to me, so any help would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!!

Request in writing when paying for the transfer than it shows the SH and MP.

Would this info work for a 2015 that the previous owner bought the extended service/maintenance plan also? Getting conflicting info from dealer and online.

Does anyone know if the SH Refresh includes Brake Fluid? I know it doesn’t include brake pads but wondering if it covers the fluid?

Our dealer is trying to tell us it’s $395 to flush the brake fluid with 12k miles on the car which seems obscene.

2018s came with 3yrs/36k mile free maintenance which included brake fluid services. Obviously you’re under mileage so you would qualify based on that but check to make sure you aren’t over 3yrs from the in service date. Assuming you’re ok there, then the dealer should perform the brake fluid service free of charge.

Yes but you need to check the in service date to make sure it’s still within the time window of the plan that was purchased for that particular car. The extended maintenance went as long as 6yrs/100k miles from the in service date IIRC but they also sold shorter intervals - i.e 1yr extensions so that would only give you 5yrs and 75k miles (might be 60k miles, not sure) from the in service date.

Thanks but we are the second owners and did the $100 SH Refresh which got us an oil change free but they want to charge for the brake fluid so I wanted to see if it's included with the SH Refresh or not.

Brake fluid is included even with the basic program. Brake pads, rotors, wiper blades, clutch and drive belts are not included.

Ie they won't even replace the pads? Or just the rotors are excluded?

So I'm in the same boat as you; I just picked up a low mileage 2017 M4. Below is what it shows on the BMW website when I searched about prepaid maintenance. I take it 1 and 2 are what you're referring to as 301 and 302?

And 302 = Ultimate Care Scheduled? Sorry I don't find this graph very helpful...

Also, are 3-7 financially worthwhile at all? Or much cheaper to do at an Indy shop? I have ceramic brakes, so having rotor changes is not going to be covered, and likely won't be necessary in the first place.

Anyone know if the spark plugs with the third oil change would be included with the $100 refresh? Thanks in advance!

Depends on mileage, I tried getting the spark plugs done on my 2018 M3 on its 3rd oil change they said it was too early. Car has about 19,500 miles.

Oh no, my question was if spark plugs would even be covered with the $100 refreshing of the maintenance plan -- whether they do it on the third or fourth oil change.

Yes it does. I did the $100 refresh and the SA told me it would be covered if it needed to be done.

Sounds like the $100 refresh is a no-brainer then!
