I just got a warning that my clutch temp was too high and car went into limp mode. Anyone have this before? Tried flooring it and the car just went into limp mode.

Yeah I was on the freeway and needed to get over and floored it so I could get past the car next to me. Car revved and then died and got the warning. Hope it's not an ongoing issue..... I was driving in efficienct mode too. So it was really odd

What setting do you usually use on the DCT? 1,2 or 3?

I don't think it has anything to do with being in efficient mode or not.

It's more beneficial to set your throttle to sport or sport plus. Even under normal driving the cooling is enhanced. Give it a try, you will hear the various fans running and the engine oil temp will actually be lower.

For the clutch or the engine? It wasn't the engine temp

The car has a ton of cooling. I have to believe that the extra cooling also cools the DCT when in sport or sport+

It is better to drive in D2/3 or S2/3. When you drive in the D1 setting, it's basically riding the clutch to smoothen the shifts but long term it will shorten the lifespan of the clutches.

Again, I have no idea if this has any negative bearing on the temperature of the cluthes.

+1 on the really? I always drive in S3 so maybe haven't had the opportunity but ...

I've never had the clutch warning and I beat the shit out of that thing* for hours at a time.

Allegedly, if my lease return agent is reading this.

Yeah, I hadn't even been driving that long either. Maybe 15 min. Wasn't driving hard either. Just cruising. Hopefully it was just a one time thing. When I do freeway driving I always just drive in efficient and the first shifting position. I guess I'll change my M1 button to D2 now. I thought that it really only started cooling things down more in sport plus. Didn't think the shift position had anything to do with that??? Only time I hear the fans kick in more is when I drive in sport plus. Even sport i don't really notice a difference in engine temp or fans going

So you got a warning light saying your transmission was too hot and your initial thought was to... floor it?

I'd love to hear your reasoning for this.

No, I floored it, and got a warning that my clutch was too hot. Car went into limp mode. Started to pull over and it went away.

Sorry, I assumed your OP was in chronological order.

I'd assume perhaps too much stop/go traffic. DCT sometimes slips 2nd gear for an easier take-off than jerky 1st gear. I can imagine too much of that with not enough airflow can be recipe for an overheating transmission.

I would take it in when you have a chance just to check if everything is good

I track my car and really abuse the clutch in a racing environment and have zero issues with cooling

OP, that's worth mentioning and taking the car in for. Seems like the computer messed up and slipped a clutch for way too long.

Never had that happen in 2 years with my f80.

I had something similar happen once in my z435 dct but the car was in overall limp mode from oil temp (which is pretty much an irrelevant situation for the f80, as others have pointed out, given all the engine and gearbox cooling)

I called my service advisor and talked to him about it. He said he'd never even heard of this warning before. Since it's only happened the once he said not worry about it and just bring it in if it happens again. Hasn't happened again yet and hopefully it won't.

Only error you received was the DCT Over Temp? Also what were your settings other than D1? How were you driving prior to the warning? Like it was stolen? jk jk

I've only overheated the DCT (twice) and that was at the drag strip with 13+ almost back to back launches using LC. I dont think the dealer will be able to pull any data if your car is functioning fine now though.

I literally was just cruising on the freeway for about 5 minutes. Floored it to get over and it just died and got the warning. It was in efficient mode so I wasn't driving hard at all. Hahaha

I had the same issue as the person that posted. Let the car warm up, didn't make any boost. Put it in d1 instead and floored it in sport + instant clutch overheat warning, car wouldnt shift out of 2nd gear. Immediately pulled over, shut the car off and turned back on for it to work perfectly fine. No issues since. Just never gonna do a burnout in drive ever again..
