TPMS Issues After New Wheels

I’ll start by saying I’ve read through 4 or 5 old forum posts about this issue.

2016 M4 GTS
19x11 Apex RS5 in Rear
19x10.5 Apex RS5 in Front
Toyo Proxies
  • On my OEM wheels the TPMS worked fine
  • The second I sealed to the Apex wheels I had issues with them not being recognized
  • I’ve swaped two sets of OEM sensors out
  • 36106890964
  • 36106881890
  • I’ve tried raising the air pressure as recommended
  • I’m driving around as I’m trying to reset (20+ mins at times)

The last shop I went to said that they’ve seen aftermarket wheels moving the sensors too far away to be read.

I’m at a loss for what could possibly be wrong?

When you go to the TPMS reset screen you should see a percentage value increase as you drive the car. Leave that screen up. You’ll need to reset every time you swap wheels.

Traction control must be completely enabled for it to reset. You can’t have TC off or be in MDM mode or it won’t reset. At least that’s how it behaves on my 2015 F80.

Also be sure the tire pressure matches what’s on the door tag. That’s 32 PSI on my car. Or it won’t reset right. Or maybe at all.

These are all things I noticed when swapping track wheels on my car.

Thanks for the feedback - I’ll try getting the tire temps to match exactly to the door card info.

I have left the TPMS reset page up as I have been trying to reset them - but I don’t see any % value indicator at all. I’ll send a pic tomorrow when I try again.

Takes longer to get to 100% at slow speeds so always a good excuse to use that right foot

For sure - I’ve mostly been on highway speeds for these and even tried at the track.

Does it fail at 0% or go to a percentage and stop. If say it goes to 50% it has acquired a couple of wheels. If it fails at a percentage ISTA will show you an error code as to which wheel is not connecting. Additionally any discount tire should be able to read each tpms sensor separately and tell you the issue.

Hard to believe 4 brand new sensors failed, twice. Mine has worked with OEM and aftermarket sensors just fine. Go to an another tire shop and ask them to put their tpms scanner against the valves and verify all four are transmitting properly.

Will do - I’ve been to two different shops for the two different sets of sensors and both results were the same.

Third time is hopefully a charm!!!

Still have your original wheels to see if those still work? That way you can rule out the receiver module as the issue.

That’ll be the next step for sure - hadn’t thought of the receiver module

I’m still struggling with this.

All the sensor are working per the shop - the car is just not picking them up.

I want to try cloning the sensors in my OG wheels that I KNOW worked perfectly. I’ve searched and am wondering if anyone can suggest a good tool to clone my OEM sensors and use thst to reprogram my new sensors. Help would be appreciated.

Also - I have euro MDM coded on my car - any chance that can causing issue??

Euro MDM shouldn't matter as I have it on mine. I have had issues with TPMS before and it was always because they physically were not there. I mean can you physically confirm they are in fact installed? If you have sensors in your OEM wheels that work try swapping them to the APEX wheels?

Ever get this resolved? Just bought a used set of wheels + tires with tpms already installed and having issues resetting. Always stops at 49% and then receive the TPM malfunction.

I just had TPMs malfunction and tire pressure matching what’s on the door is incorrect doesn’t matter as mine are above what the door suggests. I was doing the resets d sometimes is wouldn’t go above 0percent or it would get stuck at 49 percent, so I cleared all the codes and now for some reason it resets like normal and haven’t had anymore issues.

Wait a minute. My first reaction on reading the title was “he’s got the wrong tpms frequency” but then on the 5th line you state “on my OEM wheels the TPMS worked fine”

So how did they work fine on the OEM tired and now stating you had wrong sensors 🤷🏼‍♂️

He left his oem wheels alone. He bought new sensors for the new wheels but it turns out it was the wrong parts.
