It appears that he lifted when he saw the police car. Wow thankfully he didn’t kill anybody.

Incredible footage, a couple feet either way and this would have ended way worse.
They need to take that kid's license away for at least five years. I hope he realizes just how lucky he was. Instead of a reckless driving ticket he could be up for vehicular manslaughter charges at the least. The officer is lucky beyond words, good grief. |

It’s incredible no one was seriously injured. While inexperience and poor judgement were a major contributing factor to the crash, I can’t imagine being 17 years old and having access to a car that powerful at such a young, inexperienced age. And as another stated above, there is a chance the car may have been tuned and who knows what driving aids had been disabled.
Fortunately for the officer he was able to hear those tires screeching over the sound of the freeway traffic and got mostly out of the way just in time. |

Granted I don't know the specific circumstances in this case, but parents that give a 17 yr old a 500 HP vehicle should be culpable for damages/ injuries. Most 17 yr olds are simply too immature to understand consequences of their actions.. I know I was. Know multiple kids that died back when 200 HP was pushing the limit. I probably wouldn't be here if I had an F80 equivalent back when I was 17

Saw this on Reddit this morning, had no idea it was an M3. Think I was looking more at the cop saving his arse than the car doing the damage.
Driver of the 7 series was no saint...pulled over for doing 73 in a 50. Few lessons were learned that day.

Saw this last night, noticed the M3 in the video, and came here hoping to find a thread about it.
So who is the driver? Someone here must know him. A reckless driving ticket? Texting while driving the speed limit is reckless and dangerous. Driving 120 MPH in a 50 MPH zone and that too, around a bend, resulting in a near death experience for all involved, has to rise to a level several notches above just a recklessness ticket.

I live in the area of this accident and I used to commute down that road daily. That corner is pretty sharp, and at 120mph would be tough on a track let alone a public road. I would bet that he had the car in sport plus and traction off (even if it wasn't it wouldnt matter at that speed), he saw the police lights, panicked, and slammed on the brakes causing the rear end to kick out in the turn.
My first car was a 99 camry and i did plenty of stupid stuff at 17. I can't imagine being given a M3 at that age. |

I wonder what spoiler he was rockin. Looks to be in good shape still. There should be a part out soon.
When I slow the video down, that trooper narrowly missed being splattered. I wonder why he didn’t dive over the rail as it seemed quicker to do and was not linear to the slide. Hindsight is 20/20 and I’m sure if I’m the same predicament, I’d be squashed. That’s a family hug night for sure. |

The center median isn't very wide (about 3-car lengths at most?) with only grass in between which is basically no barrier at all. I'm thinking particularly on curved parts of highways like this one (where if you lose traction, you're going to proceed in a straight line plowing onto oncoming traffic), there should be a barrier of some kind to prevent exactly these types of head-on accidents.
In this case, I'm seeing guard rails on either side of the highway but none in the middle against oncoming traffic. On this stretch of the highway where the road curves like that with only narrow strip of grass in between, it would seem logical to install a center barrier too. |

Is that a CS? Of all places, VA is the last place you want that to happen. The speed alone is a felony.

As terrible as that is, this happened because the driver panicked on seeing the cop, braked hard, oversteered and it was a foregone conclusion at that point.
I’d blame whoever gave a 17-year-old a > 180 HP car. It should have been possible to navigate that corner at 120 if the driver had a steady hand, steady foot, the tires were good and the road conditions were otherwise okay. |
