What wheels and tires do you recommend for the track?

Just got an F82 M4 with competition pack. I'm thinking about getting some wheels and tires for a track setup.

I don't need fancy wheels. Just something to seat some track tires.

And track tires, I'm not doing time trials or worried about my lap times. I just want something that's gonna be intelligent for an experienced track driver.

A long time ago when I had an B5 Audi S4, I used to run Kumho's that were heat cycle and shaved by Tire Rack. They were smartly priced albeit they took 2-3 laps to really grip hard.

For this go-around I recently got 18" Apex ARC-8Rs forged and NT01 275/35/18 square setup

First track day on this setup is coming.

I had a track day on Michelin PS4S previously and I think the brake pads were overwhelming the tires a bit. (Carbotech XP12 front /10 rear)

You'll see a ton of different setups on this forum. Square, staggered, 40treadwear, 100tw, slicks, etc. Some people squeezing 305's front/rear, etc. It's really up to you.

Apex + NT01 is the correct answer.

4S is really not that good on track. Cup 2s are ruined in one or two track days. RE71Rs are no longer in production.

Apex wheels are an excellent value and very strong - great experience with EC7s. There's higher end wheels that are better but if I had to do it again, I'd do Apex again. Great customer service too.

All tires will require a few laps to reach operating temperatures unless you're running a beast of a tire like the A7.

Just did my first track day at Willow on the stock ZCT 20"s and Michelins. Seems like I should get a second track day setup.
- Do you guys fit a second set of wheels and tires in the M4 easily? Or is it a bit of a struggle. Obviously you need a jack and some other tools as well.

I'm likely going to go Apex wheels. Probably the FL5 or SM10.
- Square corners. Do you find you have a lot of rear wheel spin?

I want to run 275x35x18 because there are generally lots of choices and tires available. When you go staggered, it becomes more complicated especially during supply shortages/pandemic.

So 18x10 square on a sticky compound.

It's a slippery slope once you start buying dedicated track stuff. My advice, and take this or toss it, is for you to do a few more track days on your stock setup. Make sure you really enjoy it and want to stick with it before you go spending money on wheels. Also, street tires are actually better for a newer track participant to learn on because you won't have extra grip to cover up mistakes.

One you decide that you do want to move forward, swapping wheels is really easy to do. Soon after that you will realize that once you have the stock wheels off you might as well change the pads for the track weekend too... and so on, and so on...

eek.. Thanks for the words. I realize looking back at what I wrote in my thread that I communicated poorly. Saturday was not my first track day. It was my first track day in the F82 M4. I've actually been tracking cars since my 1997 Audi A4 at Limerock. I raced with Skip Barber in the regional series for two seasons and have been instructing with various clubs for quite some time.

I do agree with you though. A new driver should not be using a track tire until they learn to maximize the performance of a street tire.
