Vivid Racing M4 Progress

Well the wait is over! Late Friday night we were very happy to take delivery of an M4 that a client had agreed to ship into us and start prototype work with our partners at Agency Power. We are expecting great results from the build and we will be sure to post any updates as they roll out.

With no delay we strapped down the M4 on our in-house Mustang AWD dyno right at 9am as our day started for baseline numbers. With some extra time in between for photo and video the first mod was completed and the M4 was now happily equipped with our VRtuned Tuning Box at 11:40am with our "after" numbers recorded.

Typical drivetrain loss on a Mustang AWD dyno is 20-25% which puts this BMW M4 on par with some great gains! What this 6 cylinder twin turbo definitely needs is an exhaust where the power falls off on the top end near redline with lower octane.

With the dyno in AWD mode to not affect traction control issues, the car had a consistent horsepower increase from 3000rpm to 6300rpm. Nearly 70ft/lbs of torque was gained at 4000rpm with peak horsepower gains of nearly 60 all wheel horsepower at 4400rpm!

Stay tuned as we will update this post as fast as new parts hit it!

UK Dyno results

I don't understand it either.......

What BHP did the car make before (at the wheels)? What is the OEM HP and what HP did the car make after the box?

I've added another dyno sheet from our UK testing that may have a graph more similar to what you're all used to. With the dyno in AWD mode the readings are a bit different.

Baseline MAX HP :378
Baseline MAX TQ : 371

Tuned MAX HP: 446
Tuned MAX TQ: 391

Thanks for the update

I have a further question and very genuine/important...

How come other well known tuning boxes are required to be plugged into the F80/82 in what looks like to be a more detailed/slightly more intrusive manner?

Also, the other well known tuning boxes seem to have different maps, but non return the 500+bhp figures the VR box does?

How does the VR box seem to produce said figures with less installation when others cant and safely?

Thanks

First of all thank you very much for everyone's involvement on and off the forum and asking the questions that needed some answers and a second look. With a new product, a new car, and time slated to get the best power and fine tuning with our R&D department we are proud to show our new results.

The VR Tuned Tuning Box Kits are a great plug and play solution for most all turbocharged gasoline and diesel vehicles on the market from 2012 and up. The multi-channel tuning boxes are easy to install and on some cars gain up to 100 horsepower. We here at Vivid Racing have dyno tested several applications. We are extremely confident in this product and even run a Tuning Box on our Porsche 991 Turbo and Mercedes CLA45 project cars. If the product was not good, why would we put it on $200K of our own cars!?!

So not everyone is based in Arizona and get different octane fuel from 91 to 95 octane (93 to 98 ron) all over the world. Different climates and temperature can affect how the tuning box works on your vehicle. After following the initial installation procedures, you always wont to start up your car, rev it once to 4000rpm, and then let the car idle for about 180 seconds. But what do you do if you feel the power drop off or not delivering it as expected.

On the back cover of the box are 2 torx screws that once removed give you access the dial on the tuning box. It has settings 0-9 and most all boxes are preset to 6. This dial allows for small adjustments to the power setting which allows the box to work correctly in different climate conditions and on different quality fuel.

For example, on a 2014 BMW M4 F82, the car was dynoed tested at the stock setting and fell flat on its face around 6100rpm. Once we adjusted the knob down to setting 3 and reran the car, we saw the top end improve. We finally settled on setting 4 which was perfect for the 91 octane fuel we use. So make sure you check out your Tuning Box dial when setting it up. There is no harm in adjusting this. Just know that the lower numbers, 0-4 should be for 91-93 octane and numbers 5-9 should be for 94-100 octane.

The next step to making even more power from this 3.0 Liter twin turbo was to get the M4 on the lift and begin designing an exhaust system that would flow better. The restrictive OEM downpipes were removed to make way for the fabrication process of a new set of Agency Power High Flow Downpipes. We choose to go the route of high flow catalytic converters over a catless design, so we could keep the M4 emission compliant and check engine light free, all while producing the best performance possible.

So we tested the downpipes with the VR Tuned Tuning Box setup correctly and compared to our stock baseline. These were high flow cats to help the car breathe better but not affect emissions and cause any CEL. So the turbos are flowing better, but not 100% free flowing. The downpipes really picked up torque from 3700rpm all the way to our stop test with a peak gain of about 25ft/lbs and then maintained an average of about 10ft/lbs going further. When the turbos started to hit, you could really feel these kick in. On the horsepower side, the power again started at 3700rpm with a gain of about 15hp which held steady to about 6100rpm where it tapered down to about 10hp. All of this was run on 91 octane and in all wheel drive mode on our Mustang Dyno. Tests were also done in Sport Plus with traction control off. The results show a nice curve with the high flow cat downpipes adding some gains throughout the power curve. Once catless downpipes can be made and a better flowing exhaust, we should see even further gains happen!

Feedback is much appreciated and makes the forum a great resource for everyone, if anything looks out of place please let me know and we can address it or dig deeper as well!

A little worrying that with your own branded tuning box that you have been selling for various cars for many years that you don't know how to configure the software for such cars, specially when selling these boxes worldwide....

Putting that a side, again don't understand your Dyno please can you confirm you numbers as you did in an earlier post.

Thanks

Clearly see a lot of effort being put into this. Great job guys!

However I'd like you to kindly explain the gains in "simple" english. I'm just not getting the graphs for some reason.

Thanks for the kind words Maz335i
I am sorry for any confusion, I understand that in this business we are more familiar with these graphs and deciphering them and apologize for not making it more clear.

This shows our baseline run in Sport Plus Mode Vs Sport Plus Mode with the addition of the downpipes.
Baseline TQ 387 , with downpipes 406TQ
Baseline HP 370 , with downpipes 378HP
The delta being a 8hp/18ft lbs tq. gain

This is 3 separate runs, Sports Run Baseline #1, With Downpipes and Out of the box Tune #2, and With Downpipes with Adjusted tune to #4 setting as the 3rd

Downpipes and Out of the box VRTune 464TQ and 402HP
This delta being a 77tq Gain and 32 hp

The 3rd comparison is with the Tune set to the #4 setting produced 455TQ and 404HP, a loss over the standard tune for peak power although the power is better throughout the powerband and makes better gains on the top end.
This delta being a 69Tq gain and 34 hp gain over our baseline.

So you've seen the M4, maybe own one and drive it occasionally, maybe you're scared of heights, maybe you have fragile ankles and one misplaced step out of your M4 could spell disaster. Well hold onto something, because I have a solution from H&R!

What will you get in the kit you ask?
This box here of course.
Is it just any box?
NO, you can see from the below image that this box was in fact made in Germany, it is consumer rated #1, and has an ISO certification! THIS IS NOT YOUR AVERAGE BOX

Well that's fine, but what's in the box?
Springs of course, and are they boring old blue E46 springs from yesteryear?
NO WAY, these are RED, no room for blue springs on an M4! Are you crazy??!!

I know what you're saying to yourself, " I have this certified box, and these red springs now what?"

Make a metal dog sculpture with a hammer head for a face and an old chain for a leash?

Sure you could do this, but who even has an old head off a hammer laying around, plus now you'd need a welder and it would ruin that beautiful red finish we just discussed

Instead, let's install the springs on the M4

Pictures are great you say, but you'd prefer to see how these install with dramatic background music and a technician with strong manly hands doing all the work while you sip your coffee?

DONE AND DONE

So you've seen the video, but the dramatic background music has your blood pumping to see how the M4 looks in great lighting in the back parking lot of our shop in Arizona on a sunny winter day after the installation?

Where can you get your set?
VIVID RACING

How much are they for forum members?
CHEAP

Who should I ask for when I call to get mine? I can't live without them?!

Thanks guys! Unfortunately the last piece of the build is BC Forged wheels that will not be here in time for installation, so I will be sure to prod the client for pictures once available

As luck would have it we had a very understanding customer and some great fast shipping from BC Forged on their wheel set and we are proud to say the car has now returned to sunny California and it's owner to finally clock some well deserved miles on it (*we received it with 24 delivery miles)

Before it was transported we were able to put together a quick photoshoot down the street from the shop and I'm not sure if it's the body color or just an overall clear day but the photos turned out 1000 times better than any shoot we have done on my cars at this same location in the past!

Wheels are 19x9.5 and 19x10.5 BC Forged RS43 in their Matte Bronze finish, a color that concerned me early on but it really just works with the car. OEM tires were kept and of course no rubbing or modifications needed for fitment on the mild H&R springs.

Car looks great!

I like the colour of the wheels but not so much the design. Only my opinion of course.

Have fun with this beast!
