Good question. I jumped on an Apex forum group buy. Apex wheels 18 square with Michelin X Ice Xi3.

If I were you I would keep checking the forums in the early part of the fall for the inevitable winter tire/rim Group buy to pop up

Yes, with good winter tires and common sense driving. Ground clearance may be an issue depending on the amount of snowfall and how fast they clear your roads.

Those could work. Not sure how the Pirelli Soto's perform in the winter. You are in upstate NY correct? Others will chime in but I might go with all out snow tires where you live. Blizzak's etc etc....

I have a pair of Michelin X-Ice 2, and one of my colleagues at work has a 340i with the Pirelli SotoZeros.

I love my tires & he HATES his. Every winter he's getting stuck and sliding/swearing at the tires meanwhile I drive similar streets in the city and don't have as near as many issues.

My vote is go for dedicated snow/ice tires and forget performance in the winter months. That's what summer driving is for!

My wife also has the newest Bridgestone Blizzaks and they're great too when I drive her car. She hasn't been stuck once.

I run my M4 in Boston with Dunlop WinterSports. They're a performance winter tire. Let's face it, there are only a few days each winter when roads are covered with deep snow. Most days, there's no snow at all on the roads, so why not have fun driving on all those good days? btw, there are a couple of days each winter when I won't take my car out due to too much snow on the road. I can live with that for all the other days.

nah I'm in Utica NY, not as bad as ithica in terms of snow

Lived in Michigan and Albany NY. Run Pirelli Sottozero 3 in the winter. F82 is a beast in the snow

I have an old square set up from my 340i running Sottozero III with 225/45/18 on 18x8 BBS SSR wheels but highly doubt I can repurpose on my M3.

Will have to buy 18 or 19 inch wheels, preferably OEM. I understand square setup is recommended in the winter but think I may just go staggered.

I live in Albany, NY. Drove my '15 M3 for 3 winters on 437M 19" wheels on Bridgestone Blizzaks, no issues at all. I recently purchased 641M wheels/tires from another member for my '18 M3. Bottom-line, you will be just fine. The car is very predictable and manageable in snow with the right tires.

I drove mine last winter in Milwaukee with Michelin Pilot Alpin pa4, 245 square on 18 inch Apex Wheels. It was fine, but I'm also in a city where things get plowed fairly quickly so I don't often drive in heavy snow.

Since this thread got bumped up and winter is in the distant horizon I wanted to ask the question has there been any tests done comparing 17/18" snow tire vs 19/20" with the same exact snow tire being any different in terms of handling/grip in snow? I've searched and didn't come across any tests and most people get the smaller wheels due to price and tire selection.

I've always had dedicated snow tires on my BMW's and its amazing how much of a difference they make. Ive had it on RWD and AWD models and even rwd cars were fine on snow going up a hill. It all comes down to your technique and tires. My F10 550 was rwd with square setup 19" snow tires handled better than my X5M with 20" snow tires because 1) blizzaks on 550 vs Pirelli on X5M and 2) the X5M had massive wide tires that I really felt hindered grip in the snow. Narrow is always the better option for snow traction but now i'm wondering if the diameter of the wheel with all other things equal have any impact as well...

Drove my '18 M3 today for the first time in cold weather after some snow. I have sotrozero 2 on 19s for the winter. This is my first winter with RWD. Felt pretty good. I did not drive it during the active snow, I'm still too nervous. There was some ice on the side roads and my driveway, and it was kinda tough to back into my driveway haha. But the main roads and expressways were totally clean.

I have a "winter car" so I'm not sure how much and when I will be driving the M3 this winter. I definitely want to drive it on dry days. Problem is it gets cold here (Chicago) and the same snow and ice can be on the roads for a week or longer.

So for those of you who DONT daily your F8x, when do you drive it, and how often. I will probably drive it to work tomorrow, 35 miles each way...

Drove my M4 to work today. I'm on Sottozero 3s. Also in the Chicago area. I plan to drive it if there is up to 2" of snow...we'll see how it goes. I drove my V10 R8 in the snow routinely but that was AWD.

How far is your commute?

I live in Madison WI and I daily it. Also with the Sottozeros. Not a problem at all. As long as you're not an idiot with it. I drove it in blizzards last year and I was fine. Use caution on turns obviously. Lower speeds in the city I turn off traction control. Just find I can control it better. Higher speeds I turn it on.

I live in New England and have been driving RWD cars for about 10 years in the snow, 3 in an M3. Winter tires are a must for snow, and recommended for cold weather. The M is no different than any other car in the snow. I run 255 width Blizzaks and have found them to be fine.
Most issues in the snow are stopping and turning, which are independent of drivetrain.

Not an M3 but I put some Michelin crossclimates (all seasons) on my civic last week before the snowstorm we got Monday in the Midwest. Got a set of 4 for $600.

everyone was doing 40-50 on the highway and staying behind the snow plow clearing out the right lane. I was going 60 in the snow accumulated left lane passing everyone.


if I daily drove my m3 i'd probably use these or the pilot sport as3 and run them all year.
