Tire pressure system malfunction
Out of nowhere today my iDrive shows the error “tire pressure monitoring system malfunction”
I am unable to reset the pressures and none of the 4 tires show up in the display. I’m still under warranty but I’m running my winter wheels. However I’ve used these wheels and TPMS for 2 years and no issues. The winters have been on the car for a couple weeks and this error popped up today while driving completely out of the blue. Any ideas? Thanks,

I think it might be the receiver unit that's faulty. I would book it in under warranty and then the day before swap your winters back to summers, attempt a reset and then if it works you know it's a wheel fault. If it doesn't work just drop it off the next day for it to get sorted.

Exact same problem here. This is the third season I'm running my winter wheel and tire set, and the TPMS has worked fine the other seasons. This year, they went on, and the TPM Malfunction light came on, and nothing I did could get it to go past 49% after resetting and starting to drive. Brought it to my tire shop, they scanned all the TPMs and found two of them to be dead. Brought it to the dealer and got them replaced, and problem solved.
So odd

Yup. You can also just buy one yourself (like $12 online), although it's unnecessary. I brought mine to my tire shop, they scanned with the tool, and said no charge, and have a good day. Took maybe 10 minutes.

I have an Autel tpms scanner but they're like $150. I just had to replace a tpms because I went to a tire shop to put new rear tires and they snapped one of my tpms in the process and refused to fix it. If the tpms isn't sending the signal or the battery is dead you will not be able to reset the system. Mine went to 49% and stayed there as well, I changed the sensor and all is well now

I had the same problem. Search my thread recently. I bought four new tpms from tirerack and had them replaced. Works fine now. I wonder if these things go dead if you don't drive them for a while like in the summers? I don't see why that would be the case since they aren't rechargeable but idk.
Afterwards I saw the dealer scan each one to measure the tire pressure. That's a better route to find out which one is broken and a cheaper route.

Great. Just had the exact same issue with the reset getting stuck at 49%. Guess it's likely one or more bad sensors.
I've read a few people saying that lowering tire pressure and then trying again *might* be a fix, but I'm not optimistic now. |

Got a link to this $12 scanner? Does it work with BMW TPMS? I have 3 sets of tires on a track only car so maybe it's worth the $12 rather than a trip to the tire shop.

TPM malfunction
I Changed a front passenger tire at a tire shop. They took tire off then was fiddling around with the sensor brought it to the back , I asked if everything was good he said the screw was loose came back 10 mins later and put it all back together drove home no light all pressures were good perfect when I left! The next day woke up light came on soon as I started the car no pressure at all on any tires , check front tires psi manually they changed it was at 72psi corrected all pressures to 32psi other tires was at 35 psi Tried to reset it would not even attempt to relearn. My question is, if one sensor is not connecting all of the sensors will stop to work and not show any data in I drive I think they broke my sensor and it affected the car after it started a few times I hope the spot warranty's it.

I'm having the same issue, my tpm stuck at 0%. What's weird is I had the same thing last winter, then one day it worked again after bringing pressures up to about 36 psi. I haven't been so lucky this time. Keep getting the tpm malfunction message, and I've tried all sorts of pressures above 32psi-37psi. I have a autel maxitpms scanner and it can read all four sensors and says battery is ok on all. I'm stumped unless the battery threshold on the autel scanner is lower than what the car needs. It's been driving me crazy and looks like I may have to go to the dealer.
EDIT: I got my car back from the dealer. The tpms sensors were ok. They ended up updating the software on my car to fix the issue. I had used a trickle charger (ctek lithium) over the winter and that likely caused the issue with the old software. The line from service was "tech connected battery charger and performed veh test w/isid. Faults present for rev aerial connection with Fem. Test plan directed; Performed Fem control unit reset, also states there's updated software to correct RDC failure with low voltage/jump starting veh. All is well now and resets are not an issue, glad I didn't have to get the tires I mounted and mounted just for a sensor. The dealer was very helpful, as always. |

I had that module replaced and as I recall the mechanic said that module is located under the rear parcel shelf?
