Trunk lid does not fully open anymore (UPDATE: How to fix)
When I got my car I was impressed that the trunk lid would open all the way up when I click/kick to open it. However after working like that for two weeks, it stopped doing that. Now when the trunk is open, the lid is unlocked and lifted about 1-2 inches only. This means I have to put whatever I have in my hands down, open the lid, then pick up and put my stuff into the trunk. This sucks.
Can this be fixed, adjusted in any way so that it fully opens?

Yeah its called warranty..
Take it back to your dealer and get it serviced it's a new car, let them take care of it for you so that it operates as intended

Under the trim, there is a spring you, or the dealer, can adjust. For the M4's, with the carbon fiber trunk lid, I find that going up is no problem. It's the closing. I always have to slam it.

Seems like there should be a better solution for this.. shouldn't have to slam the trunk to close it

Did u install a CF diffuser by any chance? Most CF diffusers block the signal.

I wish the trunk and doors had soft close feature. Today you have to upgrade to 5 series and above for that. But then again, the more nannies the more things to break for those of us who buy for long term.

Under the trim where exactly? Going to dealer is a hassle if this is easy to do.

open the trunk, you will see 2 support "legs", they have the springs. also bottom plastic trim may need to be adjusted slightly too.

Trunk - Auto lift open - fixed!
When I first received my car in Munich back in SeptemberI noticed that the trunk lid would only pop open but not lift itself fully open. Thought maybe they changed the design since my E60 popped open and swung up so fiercely that they maybe changed it so it wouldn't take our your front teeth if you weren't paying attention.
Fast forward to recently when I had the M performance aero kit installed and within the comprehensive directions I noticed that after the install of the CF trunk spoiler, BMW advises to adjust the spring from position 1 to 2 (of 3). Adjusting the spring looked pretty straightforward so I peeled back the trunk cover and saw the 3 spring notches. I decided to test position 2 as directed by BMW for the CF lip spoiler. Adjusted the springs on both sides but the trunk would only pop open only slightly more than before. Strange, maybe I got a weak set of springs so I went back in and moved the spring to position 3. Sure enough now the trunk auto lifts when released. Just wanted to share as I recall in another thread that others had said their trunk did not auto lift when released either. The adjust of spring is very easy and took less than 15 mins from start to finish to adjust. You can probably do it in 5 mins but I had testing positions 2 and 3. |

Thanks for the info. I don't have any problems with the trunk opening. However, it is somewhat difficult to close. I wonder if mine is set on the 3rd setting... Almost like it took too many viagra.
Any chance you can post the instructions?

My problem is, after installing RKP diffuser, if I use my trunk and go to close said trunk afterwards, it will pop open after closing half a dozen times until it stays closed. Taillights flash and then trunk pops open again...
This morning when I went to the garage, trunk was open on it's own... Pain in the arse I tell you... But the diffuser looks so sexy I might just have to deal with it... |
