Brake Pads and Rotors help. Please!

Hey guys!

New to the forum here and new to BMW's!

I purchased my F83 M4 two years ago, and its about that time for new pads and rotors, BMW service center said I didn't need new rotors and to just replace my pads...but I am kind of skeptical and I want to change em anyways. The BMW Stock rotors are also very expensive lol, or is that what i'm gonna have to pay regardless?

Any ideas where I can buy some good aftermarket rotors and pads that arent too expensive? I haven't done track or anything, I just drive my car daily..i go fast and maybe hard on it sometimes, but it's honestly my first BMW (i'm a young guy) and I'm not too sure about where to get parts and stuff at for it.

-Thanks!

Your car is only 2 years old and is ready for new pads with NO track days? Maybe others will chime in, but that seems like unusually short service life for those pads if you haven't been cooking them out on a track.

If you want to stay OEM and save some bucks, check out getbmwparts. I got rotors and pads there for quite a bit less than my local dealer price.

Noooo..the car is 2015...The previous owner, put 18k miles on the car. The car is now at 34k. I got the car Nov 2017, and just now got the brake light for a new brake system in Aug 2019...Is that normal? Or....

I will check out that site. Local BMW dealer quoted me at 2,000 for a whole new front brake system...just the front lol.

Ferodo DS2500 pads from KNSbrakes.com.

Bimmerworld has decent prices on OEM M Performance Steel Rotors. You can do all 4 corners (rotors and pads) for around $1700.

Jesus, i got quoted $1400 from a local good mechanic for just the front pads, rotors and labor.

BMW dealer charged $2000

When I could buy the front and back parts for $1700.....Wow

I'm guessing brake jobs are a big money maker for dealerships/independents...

DIY on the first go might take a few hours but after that it gets pretty painless.

Love all the stuff from TommyLGarage

Ah. That makes sense. Not sure what others are seeing in terms of brake life span, but FWIW I've done a small bit of track/auto-x and had to replace pads/rotors in my 2015 a while back.

Yeah, $2k just for just front sounds like a lot. I think I ended up paying about half that for parts + labor at my local (non-dealer) shop.

For brake rotors, it comes down to thickness based on OEM thickness parameters. If the rotors are close change them. Just don't change them cause you "think they should be replaced".

For the street and hard canyon use, this is by far the best pad for the money, might even be the best pad for street and canyon use. On other cars this pad had a lot of bite on 32 degree mornings after a 15 minute drive of non stop freeway driving. It can take a lot of heat before you get a hint of fade, which is good because the F80 is not a light car. There are other pads like Hawk DTC-60 which are racing pad category, but I'm not sure how they will handle cold mornings, especially the first stop after freeway driving with ducts directing air to the rotors.

But the cons are they dust a lot and I mean a lot. Also the brake dust is harder to wash off then other pads. Also they tend to squeak a bit after hard driving and at random times.

Hawk DTC stuff is sooo loud. These DS2500's are dead silent too.

Stock are fine, if you want something a few lbs lighter with better heat tolerance you could go with a two piece kit from Racing Brake.
