Right now we're renting a car: pick it up at the airport, drive it until the tank gets to 1/4, drop off and pick up a new one. Each 3/4 of a tank lasts about 1 month

Also have to admit, I am not opposed to hybrid tech now that turbos are everywhere. Particularly once the weight is optimized. See what McLaren released same day of 992 GT3?

Not to keep the discussion on Porsche, but I think this video is quite relevant to the themes of this thread. Obviously a GT3 is way outside most people's needs or ability to use, and I don't like seeing them as trophy pieces that are housed away... BUT one of the overall points of the video is it represents what we all look to and for from a performance brand and how the cutting edge performance concepts should define a manufacturer's reputation.

I don't care about how comfy your 3 series it, or how many macans you sell. The reason people are buying macans, or are buying 340i's is because most likely at some point they fell in love with the poster car for the brand, or they know what that badge symbolizes. If the best BMW is showing this generation is this abomination of a G8X good luck selling standard 3 series to people. People buy your badge, and the dream you sell them. |

"With the four-cylinder, we have to say we lost some of the volume in, let me say more traditional markets. And we all know the engine is really good and the car drives very nicely but you know what I talked about emotions? This [engine] is different. ... Now with adding the six-cylinder again – with the GTS and GT4 – we hope and we can already see in the order intakes that our more traditional markets, Europe, UK, Australia, US, the interest on the 718 really comes back" Each vehicle has to flow from the heritage and principles of the brand: it's not enough for a Macan to be a Porsche, it has to drive, sound, and feel like an SUV Porsche, and be differentiated from its peers like a Porsche ... If it doesn't and isn't, people are more willing than ever to leave a brand. And in the auto-market not only are existing brands quickly moving up-market - like Hyundai - but you've got startups like Tesla who's overtaken Audi, and new startups coming online. Brands just don't have the "seigniorage" they did 20 years ago, i.e., people willing to buy stuff just because of it ... let's face it, 95% of people here (100%?) will buy a Hyundai over BMW if it's actually better and a better value. In other words, these days, brands have to consistently over-deliver on what they symbolize or people will ghost them faster than a GT3 can get to 60. The G8x doesn't look like a BMW ... and if it doesn't drive like one the only way the G8x gets through this is if there aren't better alternatives -- you can bet Hyundai and others see the unforced error and are coming for BMW.

You touched on something here that hasn't quite been voiced by all of us in this thread. It's an excellent point that sums up a lot of what I think and feel but haven't put down on paper.

That has left us where we are now with the latest line of BMWs. Sled rockets and a much muted feel, selling bespoke interiors with gadgets rather than actual performance advances. So, what do the latest iterations of the full BMW lineup tell us? As deeldoo pointed out, that was my thinking too with the M cars. Its sad to see the bean counters at BMW dilute their top performance line in an effort to push numbers. The G8x is just another nail in the coffin. Oh, you can bet Hyundai and others coming fast for BMW, irrespective of a slip up. Last edited by CT_M3; 02-18-2021 at 05:02 PM.. |

You have to deliver on what got you there. The one thing i personally believe that has BMW, Mercedes, and Audi to an extent going for it is the mid size luxury sedan segment. Especially the entry level 3 series, C class, and A4. I personally know more than a handful of acquaintances and family friends that don't know anything about what an M car is, an AMG or anything else. What they do know is Bmw, mercedes, and audi means you made it, and the entry level model is your cheapest ticket to that title. I don't know what segment of their customer base this comprises of, but i think regardless how ugly the G8X is, that segment is more likely to stay. It's the whole "foreign, german, badge whoring". I personally find this is the reason i wouldn't include Porsche in the conversation as they have built sports cars, that's what their platform was, their reputation has stayed so true to their roots that they don't even build entry level cheapish 4 door sedans. A Porsche owner is in a different stratosphere, this is also probably why porsche doesn't make compromises and listens more. Porsche owners are far more educated than the other german big 3. Regardless what happens, launching this G8X at best is a lateral move and at worst is downright brand suicide. |

Now that they are in the US there is no excuses for the lack of reviews. Get these cars off to the press!

The 2022 BMW M5 CS is more than another high-performance four-door sedan. With a 2.9 second 0-60 mph time, it's the fastest production BMW in history. And that's not just straight-line acceleration – it's also the fastest road-ready BMW sedan around the Nürburgring. Side note -- 992 sounds noticeably more flat through the rev range, especially top end. Particulate filter effect?
