Stock side skirt removal
Hi all - does anyone have a link to a forum thread they know of or a YT video clearly demonstrating how to remove the stock side skirts from a F83/F82?
I've tried every possible variable of search criteria but I get nothing but CF clip-on guides or something for the standard 3/4 series which is totally different. Trying to access the convertible drain hole thing and I don't feel comfortable pulling hard on the skirts until I've seen someone else do it! |

I've removed the M Performance side skirts from my both my F82s when installing carbon ones, and I thanked GOD my F80 didn't come with them. If that's not an indication of how shitty the job is, I don't know what is.
They basically RTV the living hell out of those side skirts from the factory, a JDAM couldn't get them off. We had the car up on a lift, and my buddy hit the skirts with a heat gun while I put as much muscle as I had into just pushing them down and off the car. We completely destroyed both sets of skirts each time, but job done. It is a PITA, without a heat gun I don't think it's possible as you must soften the RTV. Each side took about 45 minutes to get off, and even myself being 6'5 and around 240lbs throwing up weights daily for over 20 years, it was a bitch and I was exhausted afterwards. Not to mention my hands were slightly burned from the constant heat and gooey RTV. (woe is me little baby) Anyway my F80 didn't come with them, so we bolted up the new skirts and it took ten minutes a side lol. Much joy commenced. The job sucks, there's just no other way to do it than with heat and a lot of pushing/pulling etc. |

Here's an F30. Literally the same technique. I've pulled mine off and on multiple times. Only took you need is an Allen wrench for the underside screws. |

Fat Goose did you have aftermarket side sills on your vert in order for you to get to the drain plug?

It is almost the same but there is one more screw under driver and passenger side where it say m3/m4. You need to remove that to access another screw underneath

There was a video from body shop shows how they repaired a m4 it shows how to remove the side skirt. It is a white m4 and turn out it's sold as "no accident". People post online and I found that video is useful as how to remove side skirt.

I take a nice sturdy chopstick and a length of super-braid fishing line to make a garrote tool. You remove any screws and slip the fishing line between the body and the piece. Pull the handles left and right as you pull and it cuts the glue/foam/tape right through. I put a small wedge in as I go so the tape goo doesn't re-stick the piece. Works great for spoilers and CF pieces without gouging your paint.
Make sure you use >50# super-braid line…regular fishing line breaks easy. Don't cut your fingers with the braid, it will slice you quick if you get a finger wrapped, use sticks as handles. After the part is off you use your 3M Adhesive Remover Wheel on a slow cordless drill to get the tape goop off both sides. Thanks to Tommy L Garage for the eraser wheel…friggin priceless. And only the 3M one works well.
