How can I verify if my M4 has the CF Driveshaft or not??
Ok so one month in and still loving my 2018 Austin Yellow M4 (Competition and Executive Pkg) so far. Im still learning the car and was wondering if it came with the carbon fiber driveshaft or not?? Also are there any downfalls to having the CF Driveshaft?? Any issues?
Thanks |

I believe they started using the steel driveshaft in November 2017. It would depend on the build date of your vehicle.

Best way to verify is to look but your build date suggests you should have it. Take a look and let us know. It will look like this:

Ok Thx. What are the Pros or Cons of having one over the other?? TBH I never knew such a High stress\load item could be made of carbon fiber but then again Im not that kind of engineer. Also i dnt know the limits of carbon fiber im just familiar with the small parts that can be covered using carbon fiber but such high stress bearing items especially for an automobile ive never known could be built using CF (except my bike is also CF but thats a bicycle not a car). Thx |

* Remove the aero/sound cladding * Remove the exhuast * Remove the Heat shield There's been a recent Recall. If you have it, you should have been notified. If not, go to your local dealer and without doing all of the above (VIN) he can easily tell you. The Recall replacement is Free and they do so with a like (Improved) C.F. driveshaft! Cheers!

Im having my car inspected at the dealer tomorrow morning being that my Warranty end in couple weeks (Oct 28) so Ill have them check that and see if my car is under that recall. I have the MyBMW app and it says 0 recalls found but im not sure if i can trust that. And the carfax history does not show anywhwere where that was replaced if it indeed had a CF driveshaft. I guess ill have to confirm that tomorrow when i take it in. I told them i want and end of warranty indspection and the lady said yeah we will do an insoection. I hope they understand i want a detailed end to end inspection. Soundd like she just blew it off like they would just "look at it" but ill reemphasixze ince im there tomorrow. Thanks |

OK Thanks ill check these out. But a lightened Flywheel isnt carbon fiber though and not necessarily load bearing as well right?? But i get what youre saying some of that same concept may apply here. Ill checkout the rest of the links you sent. CF just doesnt seem like something he regular lay person would feel confortable with in an application like this is all im saying. There must be some exceptionally STRONG CF designs out there to be used like this. Thx again |

Only reason they got rid of the CF drive shaft was to make room for component to address EPA concerns. Consider your CF driveshaft an upgrade. I recently replaced my manual transmission rear bushings and confirmed the presence of my CF driveshaft. Build 03/17

In theory then, the cars with the CF driveshaft would be faster than the later models without the CF driveshaft unless HP was increased on later vehicles. I’m assuming there is no difference in reality, or so slight to even matter as I haven’t heard this discussed or tested in a video.
I’m just glad to be back in a 15. I found the driving experience of my 18 Comp to be far less fun than the 15 M4 I traded it in on. Now with the 15 M3, hooligan mode seems to be reenabled and the car is just a ball of fun to drive especially with the KW V3s I installed. |
