Only time I've ever let someone else hook a trailer up to my truck they dented my tailgate... I didn't check it and lowered my tailgate to get my chains out to tie down the tractor. As I was getting the chains he started driving the tractor up on the trailer and that's when it popped up and crashed into my tail gate. It was VERY sickening! I've kept the dent as a reminder even though he's offered numerous times to fix it. I may fix it one day since the rest of the truck is in great shape. Just ceramic coated it too. It's always something...

This doesn't sound too far fetched until you realise the car was a Silverstone with Sakhir Orange leather. It's not your everyday combination that wouldn't fly out the door too quickly, so the dealer's actions, to me, were very noble.

My point is that there are dealers who go well beyond expectations, and those who think a bit more practically. I doubt you could refuse the entire car for a scratch but certainly delay delivery until it is perfect for the owner to drive away.

As it turned out, they moved the original car within two weeks when a punter walked in and immediately fell in love with the colours (apparently the Porsche 917 was his favourite car growing up).

Yes, but also the M3 is like 200k in Australia so I wouldn't take delivery, either.

They are under no obligation to further financially compensate you. They already offered to fix and resolve the issue. Why not see how that turns out before you make a fuss? New cars can have imperfections despite being new. This can happen at the port, in transit, during dealer PDI processes, etc.

I’ll agree it’s upsetting when something like this happens.... but also you need to be a bit realistic with your expectations.
Yea, $80K+ car and it has a massive scratch in it - that is through the paint.... realistic? seriously...

You walk - you say "I'll be back when it is factory fresh" - let them figure out how to make it perfect, but you don't pick it up and then be told "come back in a month and we will fix it".

and while under no obligation to compensate, they are under an obligation to make it perfect - and they should realize that they had something to do with this and own up to it.

Sad but true (actually around $150K but you make a good point).

Crappy situation all around. From the dealer's perspective, they know this is your dream car, you were so excited for this moment, only to have it dulled by a a scratch. From your perspective, this is your new baby, and it's been molested before you even got a chance to fart in it. We're all enthusiasts here, but in the scheme of things, it's a scratch in an otherwise beautiful car, if you refuse delivery then you'll have to order an M4 since there are no more M3 allocations.
The onus is on the dealer to make it right. But they're going to say it happened during shipping, and file a claim with their shipper. This does happen all the time, and you more than likely will not notice it. My local dealer had their only M3 CS come in damaged. Something fell on the front fender and the fender will likely need to be replaced. I was talking with the GM and he just said "it happens, it just sucks because it seems to only happen on the cars you pray it won't happen on." They feel your pain too.

The better analogy for the wife thing is, the day before the wedding, your fiancé has an accident and gets a nasty gash on her face. Will you still marry her? She's still the same girl...

Of course this analogy presents several interesting options if you are leasing

No, the other guy's wife analogy is better.
Car is not a wife. Do not take delivery if you are not happy with the car. But be reasonable. If the issue is the car has some quality defects, don't take it. But if you realize that color combo just doesn't look good together (and you ordered it that way) then man up and take your ugly new car home (then post it here and everyone will love it and support you with your weird choice).

Also do not marry your fiancé if at the night before wedding you learn she is on parole, is drug addicted, or has a million dollar debt for partying while in college and expects you to pay it off since you love her, etc.

interesting read for lunch break
my conclusion :
your dealership has poor management and extremely poor customer service
they should have done the following
1. GM comes out : extremely sorry about what happened . We can fix it ourselves or we will cover the cost if you wish to go somewhere else
2.we will give you our best loaner during repair
3. as a loyal customer I , GM, will throw in a one day pass for M school
op would have been happy and story is over .

If you don't need the 3, we will replace the first set of tires at no charge, or extended warranty and maintenance until 6years/100k

I really need to stop poking at the kind of people who compare a damaged car with being betrayed by their wife, but sometimes I can't help myself

We'll all hopefully be prosperous enough to take delivery of a dozen or more cars in our lifetimes, so aren't you guys being a little bit out of perspective? If you still don't think so, that's cool - difference of opinion.

OP, I think you made the right call. It might be really tough to find another M3 you want with production ending. And as others have said, that damage can be repaired perfectly. Enjoy your car - it still drives as amazingly even with the scratch !

Why are you yelling bro? It's hard to not take delivery after 4 months of waiting and scarce allocations. Let them repaint the scratch and keep calm.

Because people such as you just sign the paper without a thought and give up all leverage.

Perhaps yelling it will stick in people’s minds longer.

So this past Friday, I went to pick up my brand new 2018 F80 ZCP at my dealer. This is the car that have have been dreaming of owning since before I had my license. I could not sleep the couple nights before picking it up, feeling like a kid on Christmas eve.

Unfortunately with timing, we had our family vacation planned for this weekend and were supposed to leave on Thursday night, and the car was scheduled to arrive at the dealer this past Friday. Boy did I want to cancel vacation, but I knew I couldn't. I called both my SA and BMW to see if there was any way to get it delivered sooner. They managed to get it to the dealership on late Wednesday afternoon. Things were looking very good. My plan was to pick it up the next day. However, to my disappointment the MSO did not arrive. My SA told me it did not get delivered it should be there Friday morning via FedEx.

Negotiations with my wife now began, and she knew how long I have waited for this dream car of mine that she agreed we would leave Friday night so I could get the car Friday morning. Awesome! Aside from wanting to get the car as soon as possible, I also feared it sitting at the dealer for longer than it needed to. You hear horror stories of what happens at these places.

Friday morning I hurried over to the dealer. As I drove through the dealer lot to park, I saw her! She was beautiful! Still with the protection wrappings on just the way I like it.

I met with my SA and chatted for what seemed like forever while I anxiously waited for FedEx to hopefully deliver the MSO so I could take delivery. Thank goodness it finally arrived! While I had to wait for them to get the paperwork ready, my SA said lets go look at the car. I was so pumped!

As we walked the lot towards where I saw it parked, my excitement continued to grow. Then I saw one of the car wash guys driving it to a spot to park it. The protective coverings were now removed. I felt a bit of unease as I'm use to watching the protective wrapping come off in front of me from my previous BMW deliveries. Plus I did not want or ask to have it washed. Anyway, my SA told him to pull the car back into the bay so I could get a good look at it.

I was in awe! The tanzanite blue looked amazing! I started on the driver's side panel taking in every beautiful detail this car had to offer. It was everything I hoped for and more! While in a dream like state I continued to walk towards the back of the car in the direction of my SA. When I got to the back, I noticed something from the distance on the top right side of the trunk. My initial thought was it looks like scratches, but that's impossible, its brand new and was just covered. Perhaps its just threads from the towels they used to dry it I thought to myself. As I got closer, I realized they were not towel threads unfortunately. They were scratches. My joy and excitement quickly dissipated and was replaced with nausea. There was one long scratch several inches long and a couple smaller ones next to it. I ran my hand and fingernail over them and could feel just how deep they were. I wanted to vomit. I called my SA over. He was in shock as well. The car wash guy claimed it was there and they sent pics to someone at the dealer to find out what to do. At this point I'm realizing they probably wanted to try to cover it up before I had a chance to see it.

To say the least, my excitement was gone and now my mind was just racing with a million thoughts. How could this be?! How did this happen?! What do I do?!

Not to drag this on, I will try to end this rant. My SA told me not to worry and he talked with his manager and they would have their body shop correct it while we did the paperwork and it be would fine. The ended up having him wet sand it. I can still see the all the scratches and now swirl marks too. Ugh! They told me when I bring it back for the 1200 mile service that will repaint the whole trunk and it will look as good as new.

Do you think this is the best method? Do you think the paint will all match or will I notice a difference? Will they have to do the side panels as well to blend it?

Part of me is debating if I should just leave it as is and not have them mess around with it anymore potentially making it worse. I think I would rather just live with it the way it is. Otherwise, I think I would rather find my own bodyshop/detailer to correct it. Feel free to give me your thoughts and opinions.

Is it possible to just get a whole new trunk lid to replace this one? Even if I could get it replaced, do I run the same risk of possibly seeing variations in paint color?

Also, can you believe they would not take a dollar off the price for this issue? They just said they will take care of it. And they denied taking my $1k coupon for the ultimate Japan trip offer.

I really want to contact BMW NA to complain about the whole thing.

I'm also debating how to handle the survey when I get it. I now that effects the dealer and their compensation. I don't want to do anything to hurt my SA as he did noting wrong. But I'm annoyed about the scratches and how it was handled. I think the general manger should have come and spoke to me directly. This was my 6th BMW from this dealer, and he did not even come out to talk to me.

That's it for now. In the meantime, I'm hoping to put all this negativity behind me and focus on what amazing car this is and how grateful I am to have it. I just keep telling myself, it's only scratches, and nothing major. Be thankful and enjoy the car!

Hopefully I will get time to post some pics of this beauty!
Just flat out refuse delivery. Only an automobile and like they say " can make more" good luck and hope everything works out.

OP, sorry to hear. I understand how you must feel, waiting four months and then this happens. While I really think your dealer should have stepped up, in the end, paint the trunk, move on and enjoy the car. However, I do think that the dealer's response needs some push back from you to the manager and BMW NA. They hand a guy who has been waiting for four months a car with a major scratch that they obviously did and their response is "we'll fix it in 1200 miles"?? That would piss me off more than the accident. The manager should have been all over this, apologizing and making plans to fix the damage ASAP.

Reminds me a bit of when I ordered my first BMW in 1998, a 1999 5-speed 528i. The main reason I was buying a BMW at the time was because it was the only sedan in its class that could be ordered with a manual transmission. So I see my dream car (at the time!) three months later in the showroom. Looked so good...until I looked inside and saw the automatic. Then the salesman had the nerve to tell me that is what I ordered. I don't get mad easily, but I was absolutely livid. Needless to say I didn't accept the car and the dealer sourced one of the few new 5-speed 528is in the country for me. I did get a few extras on that car that I hadn't ordered on my spec, "free" of charge. I can laugh about it now, but I feel your pain!

There is a difference in what you expect from a 3 Star Michelin Restaurant and McDonalds.

Just as there is a difference in what you expect when buying a $80k vehicle and not a Kia.

In fact, even Kia would not present a new car like that to a potential customer.

That kind of attitude leaves them enabled to do it again.
