I hope that you can find the previous owner and that they will give you a full history of the car.
In 2012 I found a 2006 Z4 M Roadster at a dealer in the Bay Area. It seemed to be in excellent shape and it was exactly the combination I wanted, Interlagos Blue, with black extended Nappa leather interior (the same as the full leather option in the M3/M4), carbon leather trim, Executive Package, and heated power seats. Also, low mileage (~32,000 mi), paint and interior in great condition, original tires(!), and blemish-free wheels. I arranged for a PPI at an independent shop, flew up, and took it to the shop. One of the first things we noticed that the rear fender well liners were worn through. There was some evidence of overspray in the front. Then the mechanic decided that since the seats were in such good condition and the fender liners were worn through, that this car must have had the seats removed, the wheels replaced with oversized "race tires" and that the car had been raced, and possibly had front end damage. That this roadster had been "raced" was absurd to me as there was no evidence that there was ever a roll cage installed and you pretty much couldn't race this anywhere without that. This car certainly looked like a cream puff to me! The "mechanic" found that everything else about the car checked out and was in sound mechanical shape. I decided to buy the car and drove it back to San Diego. Soon after I found the owner had been active on ZPOST, a Bimmerpost forum for Z cars. I messaged back and forth with him several times. He had posted numerous pics of the numerous wheel and tire combos he tried, going larger each time. This accounted for the rear fender liners being worn through as he said that the tires "rubbed". This also accounted for the original tires and blemish-free wheels, as he put 19" wheels and tires on within about six weeks of buying the car new. The original wheels and tires sat in his garage for six years before he put them back on prior to trading it in on a 135i. He also owned a motorcycle, which he rode most of the time. Bottom line, this was his "second" vehicle, which he drove for ~5000 miles/year and it was a cream puff! I also found out that there were a couple of people on Bimmerpost who had checked out the car in person but for some reason or another, passed on it. At least one person said it was in "rough" condition but I had also looked at another Roadster, same year, with over 60,000 miles, and believe me, this was in really rough condition and would have taken a lot of work to get it back to great condition. There was nothing remotely "rough" about this car at all. The only thing "wrong" with the car is that he hadn't done the Inspection I service at ~30,000 miles which includes a valve adjustment. This is a fairly expensive procedure as you have to measure and change shims in the N54 engine, which is a little tricky and tedious but is relatively straightforward. I had a friend with an E46 M3 who owned the shim kit and the special tools need to remove and replace the shims, so we did it in my garage in an afternoon and all it cost me was a case of beer and a bit of wrenching! I replaced the rear fender liners myself, a relatively easy job. I also replaced the original six-year-old tires with Michelin PSS. I also found out later from the dealer that when the car came in, the fangs were damaged, not uncommon, but to make it look better cosmetically, they had done a quick patch job and resprayed the fangs, but hadn't masked things off well enough, which accounted for the overspray. I've actually done that myself, twice now. Bottom line, it was invaluable to get this info first hand, from the previous, original owner, rather than speculation and conjecture on the part of others who actually didn't know anything.

How's it drive? I'm guessing you must have gotten a pretty good deal. Depending on how many miles, I'd say less than $35k. And you must have been comfortable buying a total loss with damage reported.

you can barely see left rear wheel be crooked suggesting suspension / diff damage. How have you came u to the idea of frame damage? My friend damaged my ex e92 M3 hitting the curb on rain and besides suspension and the wheel nothing else was damaged. Here from pictures maybe some damage on the wheel but hardly visible. ANyways, this afternoon CDT time the car shall be picked up and i hope to get more info. |

Watching this video, this Ferrari seems fine after running over a curb, but it was totaled due to frame damage found. |

As a risk management professional, I'm always fascinated what people's rationale is for taking the risk on auctions like this and vehicle history tagged as total loss regardless of "pics look OK"?
@OP and others - Is it: 1) Love the car and hope u get a smoking deal w/ minimal costs to fix it and then drive it as your own until it craps out? I can understand that....a bit. or 2) Hope you get a smoking deal, fix it, and turn it around for a profit? If that's the case - good luck with that and boy I wish I had the risk appetite for that!

My GT3 came from Copart as totaled with flood damage. 07' 13k miles for $30k. Water didn't reach the lug nuts and it's been trouble free for 5 years.
The gamble does work out sometimes but I certainly would have paid an inspector to go look at it before purchasing. Good luck with the project OP! Hope you find the original owner. |

You might have gotten a real good deal on this. Sometimes insurance companies will take a loss on incidents like this to maintain a good customer relationship. It could just be the small suspension damage. I've seen cars totaled for a small fender bender. Especially matte cars since matching the sheen is super hard.
Other times I've seen stuff like this is if the car was repaired but the customer rejected the repair. I doubt that's the case here because you can see the rear suspension damage. |

If the service history in carfax has any ties to the east coat, feel free to PM me the last 7 of the VIN as well. I certainly wasn't the 2nd owner, so can't help with that, but if I was the first owner, I could at least attest to the first 29,000 miles. My car was MWM/SO with a 9/17 build date and 40% tint, so it all looks too familiar, but it wasn't exactly rare. Traded it in 12/20 and heard another dealer picked it up 3/21.

Both quarters look worked/replaced in this photo (off white) which would indicate structural damage.

Update on my end: the car got stuck in Long Beach port and i'm still waiting for it to be delivered. Hope to get it by X-mass . I don't need to describe how much im pissed off. Used M3F8x here where i am cost roughly about 73K USD and higher so from economic perspective it was worth it. Not to mention used cars market is drained and there are no cars to choose from. I still hope my decision wasnt bad and it wil end up good for me. Deliver ETA 17/10/2021 however there is already delay in Panama so ... maybe end of October. |

Might be because it's Mineral White instead of Alpine White. Pearl white has this off white look to it in certain angles.
