sorry, most setups I've seen do not show the remote camera, and I mentioned it because I saw a remote camera being sold separately for $150. it's good that the camera is remote as I dont want the large screen front and center.

I don't post on rennlist but wanted to read the thread to get some info on the device. Don't know about most users there, but the guy I was referring to made it sound like he's had a lot of training on the device.

They were likely referring to the camera alone and not the entire tablet being mounted front and center, and I didn't realize it as I didn't think there was a remote camera.

Anyway, my device arrives tonight so I'll play around with it.

Yeah, don't stress. Everything is in that box - there's nothing extra you need to run it.

Rennlist is similar to the Corvette Forum or R8 Talk - geriatric babble for the most part with no useful information 90% of the time.

One of the downsides I found the first day I used it. You cannot run the device without the camera attached. I hopped in a buddies car at the track to time his laps only to find out you cant run it as just a lap timer without the camera... Hoping this gets baked in a firmware. Dont see why it shouldnt be able to be done. Even if its some kind of toggle in the settings to go in that mode.

Every car is slightly different, so best to test this type of approach before committing to it long term.

How did this end up working out? Was the signal no issue in the long run, been several months?
I ask because i just got an E46 M3 and I remembered your picture from a while back. Looking to mount the same way.

The car has really undergone a big transition, but overall for the Garmin setup, it's remained a similar approach. Zero issues with satellite acquisition and pretty much the same times that I get from my AIM system. I can't complain about the Garmin/AIM combo.

Does the Garmin Catalyst have a built in accelerometer or does it use GPS to calculate that data?

I think it uses GPS for everything including corner G.

Garmin site says it has accelerometers.

"This groundbreaking technology uses 10 Hz multi-GNSS positioning, image processing and built-in accelerometers to generate your racing line on the track."

Anyone every had incorrect session dates and times recorded? Mine was acting weird this weekend.

Also apparently there is now a companion app for android and iOS to help review your data.

Thanks for the heads up on the companion App.
I’m currently downloading a lot of laps onto my phone.

New update-
If you synch your data you can do more!

Leaderboards for tracks you have visited. Just drill down in the app to a session and you'll see the leaderboard option with PB for all synched catalyst users.

You can now share session data with friends. Compare traces with a friend or let your coach see what is going on.

Wow those are awesome features.
I had no plans to download the app but that will now change.

Nice!

My single biggest gripe with Catalyst at the moment is the lack of ability to edit or fix sessions. Sometimes i choose the wrong course layout, choose the wrong driver/car, or need to change a variable not related to track data and there is simply no way. Kinda annoying for that data to be stuck in another session/layout.

Mine connects and idrive shows that music is assigned to the catalyst but when I turn the volume knob, it says something about "no valid source"

I tried using some BO earbuds but they stick out too far to fit in my helmet.
