Light weight rims for the track

What rims are people using for dedicated track wheels? I'm going to start taking the CS to the track next year and want to get a separate set.

Current tires are 265/35ZR-19 up front and 285/30ZR-20 in the rear.

Recapture our youth!

A, I think my course will be to first run with the pilot sport cup 2s these things were designed for. With the stock dampers I’d love to see what the M division came up with. Also, some camber plates for negative front camber will be in order. Stock camber will still eat tires at the track on stock settings no matter the wheels. I too would consider wheels but I’ll have to go big enough for the carbon ceramics. The stock wheels I think are forged on the CS and relatively light therefor. However not as light as the 17.5# of the old special order forged wheels for the E46s!

Yeah, I really miss those SSR Comps that we had! Especially when we were getting those tires for $125 each!

I find the 763M wheels to be one of the best if not THE best BMW OE wheel offering in a very long time. Being forged, they are sturdy, very lightweight and very good looking .

However, for track use, I do not find them to be wide enough. I find wider tires heat less, last longer before falling off and wear slower. IIRC, you smartly settled for the iron rotors on your M3cs, so you'll be able to run 18" wheels. While not the lightest offering, I settled on Apex EC-7 18X10ET25 front and 18X11ET44 rear as I found them to be a cost sensitive solution and still decently lightweight. Apex have since developped two other even lighter wheel offerings.

As a tidbit, are your sure you have 265/35R19 up front? I thought all M3/4cs is the US came with PSS in 255/35R19-285/30R20 sizes...

Apex for me. Decently light and have proven to be sturdy enough for track duty. And it's hard to beat the price.

You could be right on the tire size. I only googled it for my post. Lol

Any thoughts about a square setup? Would make tire life longer being able to rotate.

Indeed, I've always run square setups before on my E46 and E92 mainly for that reason. Further, M3/4 remain front weight biased vehicles, meaning that the front tires need to work more than the rears during cornering. I actually even tried a square 275/35R18 NT01 setup on my 2015 M4 in its first track season. However, the mid range torque of the S55 was too much for the relatively narrow 275 tires and I could not fully leverage the S55's pulling power coming out of corners. I switched to a staggered setup with 305/35R18 in the rear the subsequent season, which proved much more enjoyable to drive. I figure the ideal setup would be a 305 square (like the M4 GT4), however this is not possible without some body modifications (fender turning, etc...). With the staggered setup, I was able to fine tune alignment to get perfect wear on the rear but not quite on the front. I figure I waste about 10~20% of the tread on the front due to uneven wear, which is not that bad.

Personally for me if you were to be using this for a handful of track days every year, the R101 would be the best set up for that. Here are some examples we've produced along with weight figures:

https://www.hrewheels.com/wheels/series-r1/r101

19x9.5 Fronts - 19.20LBS
19x11 Rears - 20.60LBS

If you're needing the absolute lightest possible wheel around, let's say you need it for Time Attack events to get the fastest lap time possible, then the even lighter R101 Lightweight would be an option to consider too.

https://www.hrewheels.com/wheels/ser...01-lightweight

(20" Shown above)

19x9.5 Fronts - 16.70lbs
19x11 Rears - 17.60lbs

20x9.5 Fronts - 17.20lbs
20x11 Rears - 18.20lbs

I have a set from signature wheel. Their track series 503 is lighter than stock and customizable as far as size/offset. I run 19 x 10 ET 25 square setup with 275/35 MSC2s. Do a stud conversion kit if you’ll be changing/tracking regularly as replacing studs is much cheaper than replacing hubs on the car.

Yeah, I had a full stud kit on my E46 M3. Made things so much easier.

CanAut,
Are you pleased with the GC Camber plates? Are there any others you would consider as far as stack height etc?
I’m not cost sensitive and would like the best combination of function and ease of adjustment.
Thanks.

Warranty

Choose a wheel brand that's willing to warranty it if you bend or crack it at the track. Apex and Forgeline are two companies that I know that are willing to exchange the damage wheel for half the cost.

Look into Titan7 wheels. Fantastic looking, fully forged, race ready and a fraction of the cost of "boutique" wheels.

A while back there was a group buy on the newer Apex wheels SM-10/FL-5 and I got staggered set of 18 (18x10 and 18x11) of the SM-10s. They are a little lighter than the EC-7s.
I don't have anything else to compare it to though and also not skilled enough to experience the small weight difference but just FYI.

They do look good, but I recall them not having ideal fitments for the F80/82. They only had a 10.5 inch rear, right?

Interested to hear about Titan wheels here. I just picked up an M3 CS as well and will be tracking it.

Correct, usually you'll see 295s on the rear which are plenty big. Wider options may be introduced later down the road.
