Visit to Road America

Road America has been on the bucket list for a while and finally we got the opportunity to visit!

We went to the NW Shelby Club four day event, where your first day is open track and then the other three are regular DE days

Prep:
As it's 1000 miles each way, we took a single car, GTS1, and the tire trailer with eight tires. As we were only taking one car, we decided to split the track time instead of double-dutying the car. This of course lengthened our learning process but we'd do it again!

Town:
Plymouth and the nearby lake remind one of Watkins Glen, but turned up to 11. Really nice town, restaurants, etc.

Learning the track:
As we hadn't been there before, we pulled up our trusty DOF sim to learn the track. In the sim we have built a car that is the same as a track-prepped M3, and after a few practice session we were at 2:26

Track impressions:
Although many say this is "more Glen than the Glen", we disagree after our first visit. It has big straights that are fast, but the corners are incredibly slow and short, so instead of long, steady state corners you just accelerate in straights and then brake for a slow turn. Still, it probably ranks under WGI as #2, displacing VIR to the third spot

In the end, the best lap was a 2:26. There's time to be had in several places and especially in braking zones, but we're happy with the first attempt!

Nice. I can't wait to try the new surface. How was nw Shelby? I have mixed feelings about them. Any reason for black and white video?

NW Shelby was fine. Much worse than one of the well organized PCA chapters (Potomac is the best, NNJ is also good) but better than some of the yahoo open events we've been to.

The Thursday is an open day and it's expensive, so most of the yahoos wait until Friday to come.

They didn't have too many cars at the event and you didn't have complete newbies that self certified as 'advanced' drivers, so overall better than some and worse than some.

B&W is for all the videos on the channel. It's a good habit we picked up with PCA events, to protect the innocent and the guilty

Your time SYT_Shadow is better than any Prepped GT4 I know of, and just about 4 seconds faster than most GT4RS cars, outside of a few that have been prepped and a professional is sitting in the seat. Your even beating a large number of GT3 drivers I’ve seen.

Come back to Road America for BadgerBimmers at the end of Sept/beginning of October. Great BMW event, with a good mix of Porsche products to play with.

We will go back one day, but it's SO far! 1k miles each way is not a joke.

There is still a lot of time to be had at RA, but for a first attempt this was ok. It's a huge track!

I can't believe you did that without a trailer. Have me rethinking I should try and get to some tracks out of my region...Mid-Ohio, WGI, Daytona all on my have to do list.

Cheers!

You should definitely do WGI!! It's less than 1k miles for you, should be 750! Piece of cake!

No. The cars are pretty indestructible, like M cars usually are.
Such great cars, the only upgrade we think about are M4 GT4s in order to get the factory cage/fire suppression.

Are you trying to migrate those items of a GT4 to the GTS??

Nah, we'll do bolt ons to a GTS but stripping one is too savage, even for us!

I was looking at the cage the other day and trying to see how you could do a full bolt on cage. There is a company called Autopower I believe that makes one that is almost full bolt on

Once it has a full cage it won't be driven on the road, and we won't trailer a street car to the track. So it's either GTS/GTSMore that get driven or M4 GT4 that gets trailered
