If you're going to mod it out with a big wing/spoiler, etc and drive like a d-bag, then you can drive a 7 series and look like a boy racer.

And it really is interesting how vain people are.

this is awesome!

OP - seems like the new M3 is a good fit between M4 and M5.

If you care about what other people think your car says about you, rather than enjoying the car for what it does for you... you're doing it wrong.

That said, I'm 30. Just did ED on a 2015 M4. Did it Grey on full SO Leather, looks classy as hell.

Weird thread.

The avg age of either is going to be way older than 26, so not sure what you're worried about. Avg age of M5 buyer I'm sure is significantly older than for M3/M4.

33 years old had an e46 when i was 22. Probably a bonehead move at that age. Feel like i appreciate being able to purchase an m4 now even more!

I like these kinds of threads. You get to learn more about other forum members (and a lot appear to be infrequent posters) and it isn't an endless argument over HP, quarter mile times, and perceived insults (although those can be fun up to a point).

I can't believe how many people under 30 can afford an M4. I spent the last 10 years paying off school loans, debts, mortgages, financing kids education etc. I had the same car for 10 years! I still feel guilty getting the M4 after all that.

Maybe once I drive it the guilt will fade!

Then you are driving it wrong!

32 in the meter here, and I'd say I'm about two decades too young for the M5.

At first, I considered the M5 and E63 - these were cars that were 'mature'. After serious consideration I decided that I spend 90% of time driving with no one else in the car...why wouldn't I want something I can sling around, instead of a bloated car with straight line speed.

I'll swear I'll write the two last entries tonight and paste the link to the notes thread, but the two pics of me in them got the ot section today to talk about shit other than cars. I keep forgetting that other people also see it instead of only this, my home crew.

Let's just say I appreciate this lot way more again after reading that. We actually have the creme of the internet here among us!

I'm 39. I'd have had an M car sooner but it wasn't reasonable until now. Just get whatever you want that's within reason for your income level/retirement savings/need for consistent high quality ass/etc.. Don't base your decision on how it will be perceived (except by smoking hot young members of your desired sex, given your age). Pretty standard really.

I'm 21 and this is my 5th M car. Owned two E60 M5's, still have an E46 M3 and an E36 M3. Buying the F80 so I can get rid of most everything else and have a reliable car that is under warranty that I don't feel the need to convert into a race car (or at least not too much haha). Contemplated an F10 about a year ago but it's far too heavy to be track capable and decided it was best to wait for the new M3 - glad I waited. F10's are great cruiser's (like the E60) but ultimately are too "boaty". Regardless, I don't find the M3/M4 at all to be a "boy racer" car, frankly a GTR seems more "boy racer" in my opinion - there's certainly worse cars out there in that regard. I've only driven an F82 once but fell in love. Drove an M235i prior to that and found it to be fun, nimble, and quick, but it was lacking something, and the M4 filled that void. I'm extremely excited and should have the car in my possession towards the end of the month. Regrets? I doubt I will have any. Best bang for your buck in terms of an all-around great performer, as all M cars before it have been. Buy what you like, not the perception it gives others.

I see cars like Evos, and Civics, as boy racer cars... 99% of the "boy racer" types cannot afford a car like the M4 so I dont see that as a concern. Just my 2 cents...

I also have a weakness in badge honor...which I need to work on... meaning I cant opt for a 6 series knowing theres an M6 out there, so I would HAVE to get the M6, and for my current needs, I cant justify making that jump.

In your case, I would tell you to stick with the M4 simply because I prefer the M4 for my needs. Yours may be different.

I wanted more fun when driving, a nimble car but still comfort when I want it. No better option then a m4 at this moment I think.
My wife is a bit less happy since we have an one year old girl haha

Eventually you feel the opposite and could care less about that and want to do what makes you happy. Now that may very well be an M5 for you but I am happy as hell in my new boy racer M4.

You said last thing you want to do is spend 80k and feel like a boy racer but it made you smile like a 5 year old. Think you got your answer!

But if you really think age demo is important (I don't think it should) I'm 26 and my boss just ordered an M5 after I ordered the 4. Hope that helps.

I put the M4 in the category of 'sucessful bad ass mother fucker' and I put the M5 into the category of 'it would cost me money to stop and pick up that 20 dollar bill'

I think the M4 is a little more sporty for the younger crowd - and at 26, I think you convey the 'you just haven't earned it vibe' a little too much.

Boys cannot afford these toys. Men can.
M5 is a great vehicle but ask yourself if you really have a need for something that big now?

I considered the M6 GC because it is probably the most beautiful car BMW has made for a long time but stayed away from it because of the size. Nothing wrong with the car it's just a personal thing.

Thanks for the feedback boys. I'm aware that the M5 is much larger, and more "old man"-ish than the M4/m3, but my fear was buying it, and running into a bunch of college kids acting like idiots in it. Some of the comments here are priceless, Thanks again for your help. I'm going to sleep on it some more, but as of now, I have a shopping cart already put together with IND and just need to place my order for the car and the wait will begin. I am 26, making great money, with no wife, no kids, and a condo paid for, so now I can splurge on myself and have some fun. If anyone would like to put together a proper poll to see the age/income ratio of fellow owners it would be interesting to see what category we all fall in! Anyway, thanks for the help, keep the remarks coming!!

I'm 29 and decided on the m4 because I wanted something with more performance and more grown up than my 2012 sti. It came down to the m4 & ctsv

Out of curriosity, did you have other options you were looking at in regards to car purchases? Seems like we are in a similar situation (except the m5/m6 difference). I had mine, and the m4 won out over cars that were 30k+ more, for personal reasons.
