Interesting fact: Since the iPod touch does not have a built-in GPS (unlike the iPhone), it must be using the car's own GPS instead. Does anyone know what the sampling rate of the car's internal GPS is? 1Hz, 5Hz or 10Hz? For track duty, many users suggest using 10Hz for better accuracy. Although, for your ED road trip, I would think 1Hz is sufficient. |

iPad definitely can run M Laptimer (I use it to see session recordings on the bigger screen, transferred from my iPhone). I think it is using car GPS anyway.

Just some short tests , will be exploring as time goes on . Pretty darn good!, love the camera feature . Tons of things in there M-Laptimer can't do with a few gauge options too .

Will have to try this out with the two OBD readers I currently have.
Anyone get this to work with other non BMW adapters? No luck with the two I have. Keeps asking me to enter the serial number.

I do! I just used it today !
Yes. This does work on the 1M. On the app the 1m is not shown, however M coupe is listed and this worked Video starts when the car moves. Awesome overlay of info. All kinds of info available from the OBD II port is visible in the app including fuel pressure, manifold pressure etc |

I have used the M Laptimer before for my 2 previous track days, and from what I can see so far, you're paying for a OBD-II looking dongle that runs proprietary BMW commands over CANbus (I believe it's CANbus) that polls more data at a higher frequency. Pretty sure it's not using generic OBD-II protocol or generic CANbus protocol to get the data. I always wondered if iOS cannot do OBD-II dongles via Bluetooth due to the lack of proper Bluetooth profile while Android can, so the iOS based dongle are probably WiFi-based (I have seen tell-tale signs to guess that would be the case)
M Laptimer is good enough to generate some basic overlays (which is what I have been doing) - it's more work on the post processing side but not crazy amount of work (GoPro footage, Dashware, re-encode overlay). This seems to be a bit more advanced but not quite Vbox level of spend or accuracy, and it leverages the power of the smartphone nowadays and generates good track video it seems. I thought I might upgrade to this after a while but this seems to be more useful if you wanted better "health indicators" on the motor. I believe the Performance Analyzer leverages the GPS of the smartphone while the M Laptimer uses the iDrive GPS. Without know the polling frequency or the GPS accuracy, I wouldn't say which is definitely better other than the fact that this new App will gather more data from the car. Now if I could somehow make sense of the fuel consumption data from M Laptimer I might not need to get this at all... |

Wish it connected to I drive. However, if it did, then the camera video function would be lost. Need to purchase car mount separately. BMW click and drive seems expensive.

It is possible to access to app entering every s/n code you find on images on the web and app start working. My question is if the app works with others bluetooth dongle(because standard I use wifi dongle). Thanks
