Do you get track day insurance?

Or self insure?

Just curious if there is a consensus. I guess we can also fill out some "reply" comments of stories of why going to the track without track day insurance can be a costly mistake?

Yeah I do get track insurance. I hear that regular insurance SHOULD cover HPDE days but that they might not. Track insurance is really not too expensive. For me it costs less than 1 used Michelin PS4S tire to insure my M4. I typically track with my R53 Mini Cooper S though and that costs about 1/3 of the amount for the F82. To me it's a really not worth the risk

Don't quote me on this, but I'm quite certain that almost all major insurance carriers do not cover track events even if it's an untimed HPDE or *driving school.
Some used to cover track events but they all eventually started including verbiage to exclude it.
Many insurance companies, like USAA for example, will cancel your coverage for even asking about track day coverage.

Yes I do. I'm more risk averse when it comes to financial lost, and losing a car would be a big financial hit. Mentally, I don't think I'd be able to push the car hard without fear of wrecking. WIth the insurance, it gives me a piece of mind. Besides, you never know what else can happen on a track.

You never hear people who get track insurance complain when they need to make a claim, but you hear people who wish they'd had track insurance when something does happen.

I did by insurance for the first two events that I turned traction control off, these were at COTA. Otherwise I self insure.

Another question: Do you declare the original purchase price of the car, market value, or if you are still paying for it, the balance on the loan? Do you add what you have spent on the car in mods (wheels, brakes, cage, seats, etc)?

I wonder if track insurance carriers will let you remove some parts from a car that's been totaled unlike some traditional insurance carriers.

.
So true. I push close to 10/10 with insurance. It makes me a better/faster driver.

At first I used put the amount I owed. But eventually the amount owed was lower than the market value so I started putting the market amount. I'm pretty light on mods other than track wheels/tires/pads but if that amount was higher then I'd definitely put that amount in the future. Bottom line is I pick the highest number based on my circumstances at the time.

Nope, but I only track an E46M which is substantially lower in value. Personally, I won’t want to track something I can’t afford to ball up and tell stories about later. I would cry if I did that with my f82, mostly because of the unique color.

When I bought track insurance I purchased for a replacement value, assumed the car was valueless. Other reasons for track insurance: track damage, track clean up and towing.

I do, i use Ontrackinsurance For $55k its $350 for a 3day event. So its just hard not to. I with there was something cheaper for the single day events like Cmax or SCCA track night as Ontrack is $350 for 1 or 3 day event...

Also Lockton is good, but they can't do all states.

OpenTrack will only charge you for the greater value vehicle if you have more than one car insured with them. I think the theory is you can only drive one car on track at a time

Yeah, same. I would think insurance cost should increase the more time you spend on the track. Insurance cost is why I look for 2+ days events. Though I think the price quoted are the premium for 2 days but know they can still sell it for 1 day events and people will buy.
