open or enclosed transport
Buying a car from out of state and wanted to get the forum's opinion on open vs enclosed car transport. Specifically, is open transport safe enough from paint chips and dings? This is a new car, but prepped at dealer so it won't have the protective film you see on many new vehicles en route to dealerships.
Enclosed costs more and takes longer but seems like the safest route... Any companies you guys had a good experience with? |

My vote would be for closed but like you said it'd be more expensive, so it's a bit of a financial decision. When I had my 135i transported from Florida to California, the car arrived in a very dirty condition (thick black soot) and it had picked up some new paint chips. That really annoyed me and I wish I had covered it or protected it somehow.

Ah I was afraid I'd hear stories like that. The company I'm working with seems to be pushing me more towards open, suggesting that only exotics and classic cars get transported in a closed carrier.
I think I'll wait a bit more to see if a enclosed carrier option opens up. I want my car though! Quote:

If you have the time to spare, 100% go with enclosed! Ive shipped prob 6-7 cars across country. Last experience was a nasty chip on an open trailer and had to battle to get the company to repair it. Plus car above mine leaked oil all over it!

Oh yea that happened to me too with a previous car. Plus the transport guy has to get in and out of the car to move it sometimes and gets the interior dirty. Imagine if he leaves a window open for a few days during transport.

I have shipped 7 cars and have always used open and no issues but I think I have been lucky... my personal thought is its a car that will go down the road at some point and if it's used it may have a little wear already... whats the difference in cost?

OP, what are the costs you’ve been quoted and what companies?
I used JP Logistics last year when I bought my Black Series and had it shipped cross country. It was about $500-$750 more for enclosed over the cheaper carrier. JP got it to me within a day and a half. This was the week before Christmas too. They’re pricey but they shop fast and are the official carriers for Bugatti, BMW, Rolls Royce USA, etc. Worth it to me for the quick shipping and piece of mind of enclosed shipping. Keep in mind a lot of companies out there are simply brokers and don’t transport the cars themselves or own the trucks. Last edited by SuckaGDog; 10-17-2017 at 05:37 AM.. |

Closed transport for sure. The piece of mind alone is worth it.

The cost increase is minimal $3-400, but supposedly it takes longer as there are fewer enclosed carriers around... |

I bought my S2000 down in SoCal and had it shipped up to Seattle. I used a small company that my local detailer recommended. Fully enclosed and the owner/operator is a major car enthusiast to he really cared about the work. The price was actually less than most of the other enclosed transport quotes I got as well.
Here is my thread with my review: http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1373757 Here is their website as well: http://www.motorsport22.com/

RunBuggy was a pleasure to deal with, especially Moe. Highly recommend them, if you need a car transported make sure to shoot Moe an email for a quote, let him know Tai referred you. MoeH@RunBuggy.com
Car was picked up within 2 days from order being placed and delivered within 5 days of pick-up and delivered flawlessly as promised. I am a happy camper and the process and communication was so easy with RunBuggy. |
