Anyone have both an F8X and Model 3 Performance?
Just curious to get your thoughts on owning both. I'm seriously considering it since BMW is obviously losing the autonomous driving race.

Just curious to hear thoughts form folks who have lived with both. My F80 will probably be my last BMW for awhile b/c BMW couldn't figure out what they wanted to do with EVs the last 4 years under Harold Kruger. I was expecting an i4 or i5 to be ready by 2020 but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

you must be joking. have you seen the reliability of this car? the absolute potemkin grade build quality (made in a tent)? the non-existent post sale support, the lack of parts? the insurance costs?
the autonomous driving is a joke as well ... look up the insurance premiums on a Model 3. Many have gotten into wrecks because of it. |

The while point of an M car is it’s built for DRIVING enthusiasts. Now if you had said BMW is behind in EV’s compared to day Porsche, sure. I could see myself getting an EV one day, I can’t ever see myself wanting an autonomous vehicle. |

I will never own a tesla, partly because I find them completely unappealing, and partly on principle.

Mods, please close the thread. Looks like the E36 M3 kids have migrated to the F8X hahaha. I'll look elsewhere for thoughtful discussion of this topic.

I have an F82 and a Model 3 LR AWD so I have some actual insight.
You said this is a utilitarian decision. Will you have to choose only 1 car? If you're thinking about adding a Tesla as a daily, I would 100% recommend it. Not sure about replacing an F8x though. I'm in socal as well and I commute about an hour each way. I got tired of sitting in traffic so I got a Smart a few years ago and now I'm on my 3rd EV. Gotta love being able to take the carpool lane which has way less slow downs. That alone is reason enough to get a Tesla if you have the means. I don't know how long far your commute is but when I daily drove my M4, I had to fill up twice a week. With the Tesla (or any EV), there's no more wasting time at the pump dealing with unsavory characters. Plus, no more scheduled maintenance. As a commuter, nothing beats a Tesla on autopilot in traffic. I love driving as much as the next guy but putting along at 20 mph as I gas brake repeat in the M4 is not enjoyable. It's boring. It's hardly driving. Even worse is when you're behind a Mexican roadblock and you switch lanes to pass hoping for a chance to open it up only to end up in...more traffic. There's nothing wrong with letting the car drive for you especially when there's no fun to be had. |

Autonomous driving...not in my America. Maybe for long haul trucks on I-70 across the midwest. Maybe in Manhattan where the traffic only moves like 3mph. Tesla? Musk reminds me of John Delorean, who then reminds me of Doc Brown, who was a crackpot.
EV? My car will run on gas. If there are none available, then I will reluctantly buy an EV because I need to transport myself places, but cars will never again enthuse me. To each their own, but just like the guys on here holding on to their love of a MT (I love them too, but not as much as some), I am not a fan of Tesla, autonomous cars, cars you have to plug in to make work. |
