That is an interesting one. In my 30+ years of car ownership and probably 95% of vehicles with the Sunroof, I have never had an issue with the leaks...

Agree 100% - while it can and does happen, it is such a rare thing and I've never had the issue - with cars dating way the heck back to 1985...

I think people are more likely to have their power windows or door locks stop working and nobody wants to do without those

I meant I wouldn't want a sunroof for those kind of issues. Sorry for the miss leading comment!

Never owned a BMW without a SR

I've owned BMWs since the late 70s and each one has had a SR. Never had a leak or malfunction. I really appreciate having a SR during the Spring and Fall and use it religiously.

Matt Mullins on Sunroofs

I realize this is an old thread, but I wanted to mention that I was doing a live FB thing last night with Matt Mullins of the BMW Performance Driving Center.

I asked him his thoughts on sunroofs - specifically with regards to track time.

He said they normally don't order sunroofs (when possible) cause they like the extra headroom especially for helmets. He also said that occasionally they will get a car with sunroof that there is no noticeable difference on the track in terms of performance.

I can see room for a helmet being a bigger deal than the weight savings.

Regardless - sunroof for me, with a manual.

I'm on my fourth BMW, my first being a 1994 E36 325iS; my second, a 2005 E46 330 Ci; third, a 2010 335i coupe; and the 2015 M4 I have now, all with sunroofs. I have never had leaks with any of them. If I decide to get a G82 M4, I will also order it with a sunroof.

Thought CF roof was cool so got it on mine and still do, but if you daily the sunroof usefulness can outweigh the cool factor of the cf roof. I think it's almost impossible to feel a difference of weight on the street.

If your cars white/silver/blue/orange just wrap the roof black lol if you get the sunroof

Sunroof is a premium on most cars but not M.

Slick top or CFRP roof command much more premium in the used market. It's dismally small anyways, so I don't miss on these cars.

I have little to add on the impact of a CF roof on performance. But in all the cars I've owned with sunroofs I can say I've used it less than 10 times. I really wanted the look of the carbon roof. It's just too cool. Plus it gives you more head room.

It certainly is if it saves you having the helmet pressed against the roof on a track. Not being able to comfortable fit in your car is going to make the track day less enjoyable.

I had that issue in my E92 335i with sunroof. Had to lean my seat quite far back and open the sunroof cover, was still bouncing the helmet off the roof while driving. Wasn't comfortable. If I was much taller, that just wouldn't work out.

In my M4 I fit comfortably with a helmet, makes for a much more pleasant experience.

The weight savings are cool but it's a miniscule performance difference. I'm there to have fun. I don't get any prizes for setting the best lap times

I thought I'd miss the sunroof as I always used to open the cover to let some light in or crack it open for spirited drives.
But not once have I found myself being bothered by that at all in the M4.

Plus I love the look of the CF roof against the Sakhir Orange paint

Me too, I think it actually looks more cohesive with a colour matched roof.

I would love to have my M4 with a sunroof and I dont care at 450HP about 80kg add on weight. Plus Im not often enough onto tracks to care about the lower headroom at the top.
Since I wasnt be able to get the perfect coupé for me with a sunroof I took a convertible M4. But sometimes I miss the elegant shape of the M4 coupé...a closed M4 conv. looks like a shi**y E- or 3 series.

For me, carbon was a must; on both of my f80s.
