My Mid-June build (ED) F80 should be home in a couple of weeks and I have a lift at home. I'll put it up and take a good look.

Good deal. Mine should be here around the end of August and I too will get a shaft shot.

This news just in ... defect and splitting found to occur in carbon shafts ... steel shaft owners dodge a bullet and are very happy.

I drove my car 1500 miles in Europe and topped 160mph. If it has the steel shaft, I could not tell enough to care. Car felt great.

Do you also have a particulate filter in your exhaust system? Should be a big'ol box somewhere around the driveshaft area.

Are you for if it robs HP?

Next gen Z4 has particulate filter for EU markets, BMW has stated EU model will be down 50hp compared to US model.

CAN models should not have the particulate filter, they fall under US-spec.

50hp?!?! Because of a filter? No way...

It is true, it was in several recent M40i Z4 reviews. Some info pulled from articles on other forums. Apparently big topic on Porsche forums as well.

MotorTrend:

However, we were shocked to learn that this version of the B58 in the new Z4 makes nearly 50 horsepower more, at 382 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque in U.S. spec. European cars will be downrated to 335 hp due to new particulate filters on "petrol" cars.
PistonHeads:
Quote:
Outside Europe this has been given a power boost to 382hp, but EU spec cars will come with a petrol particulate filter - yes, that's a thing now - limiting output to the 335hp of the M240i.
Autoblog:
Quote:
But unlike the European version that gets stuck with a particulate filter for their tighter emissions rules, Stateside-bound Z4s will enjoy a juicy 50-horsepower gain that brings total output to 382 hp
C&D:
Quote:
This was the car we got to drive in France, although in its lesser European state of tune—apparently the presence of a gasoline particulate filter limits output to 335 horsepower, while in the States it should make 382 horses, according to BMW engineers.

Thanks for the references.

However, something does not add up. If GPF rob that much power, it would imply that they significantly hurt engine efficiency, yet they are said to have minimal impact on fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.

Perhaps it's a sizing question, where the filter they install can only reasonably handle the particulates of 335hp instead of 385, at the risk for failing emissions or failing the filter. Therefore the engine is tuned for 335 instead of 385.

Perhaps. But it is a brand new design and not a retrofit on the Z4. Not sure why they would make the GPF “too small”.

Damn! I forgot to check my wife's M3 ZCP when we took delivery last month. I can safely say that I wouldn't have been able to feel any difference from my 2016 M4.

We dropped off the car at TT Car Transit at CDG outside Paris and we probably won't see the car again until late September or early October.

It doesn't make much sense, but maybe the Z4 was designed to NOT have the filter, and it was added as an after thought just like the F80/82. Or the B58's design was supposed to be lower particulate, but the actual test result is higher and they couldn't squeeze in a bigger filter.

Either ways it's extremely short sighted on BMW's part.

There's always the chance that the car was form over function.

And or they planned on cheating the system like VW did, and now realize they probably shouldn't or can't get away with it.

We may never know

The 2015 and early 2016’s had a lot more torque down low. When was your car made in 2016?

Unfortunately US BMW’s are being affected by European regulations. At the very least, your car is heavier than previous variants, for a filter that is not required in the US. I personally think US cars should be produced as before with the CF shaft. I understand that is an issue in production, but it is a shame the car is not as originally advertised.

Glad that you enjoyed the trip and the car

Mine is F80 ZCP with a 7/21 build date. I've asked the dealer to check for both SDS and PPF during post delivery inspection. Will let you all know when i take delivery later this month.

Hi, I´m new here, so greetings from Czech Republic. This forum has helped me a lot to get information about M3.

I took some pictures of my driveshaft yesterday. Can somebody confirm that it is definetly steel DS? It looks like steel, but who knows, maybe it is just the steel end of DS. My car is Prod.date: 2018-05-08 F80 with manual transmition and competition packet.

I can´t find a particulate filter on my exhaust so I hope it isn´t there. Can you recognize it from this picture?

Thanks
