M3 CS with Apex SM-10 vs. OEM CS (Weight comparison)

Hi everyone,

I wanted to share an interesting comparison we did today.

I do a fair amount of tracking each year and CS is going to get its share in there starting this weekend. So to prepare for the CS's first track day in my hands, I had to choose a track wheel/tire set (Stock all else including fluid). I chose Apex SM-10 with NT01 as the car is on stock suspension and slicks would not be properly used with OEM alignment and suspension.

We tested the Apex SM-10 wheels for track in staggered sizing (18x10” ET25 front and 18x11” ET44 rear) on the M3 CS. The tires are Nitto NT01 (275-35-18 and 305-35-18). Fitting is spot on. No rubbing. Front looks a bit high but that’s normal.

I will be testing this set up at the track on Sunday.

An interesting observation:

Weight comparison of CS wheel with MPSS tires vs. Apex wheels and NT01s:

CS Front: 44lbs
Apex Front: 48.5lbs

CS Rear: 49.6lbs
Apex Rear: 53.2lbs

It is I think important to note that NT01s usually do weight more than MPSS tires so this is not a very accurate comparison of wheel weights just yet.

for doing this

The NT01 do weigh more because they have a substantially larger tread.

There's a discrepancy in your OP though, is it 43lbs or 53lbs for the rear Apex+NT01 ?

Thank you! I wasn't aware of the friction disc but yes it is on and has stayed on. I only know because when I read your comment, I went back to my photos (I always document before and after of modifications for this very reason) and I saw them in my photo before and after.

Not only that, but we're comparing 9"/10" to 10"/11" wide wheels and 255/285 to 275/305 wide tires. With all that extra meat, they are bound to be heavier.

That being said, the 763M are pretty darn light for an OEM when.

Awesome, informative post! Your car is some serious eye candy as well.

Out of curiosity, I did some math to find out what the OEM wheels weigh in at. Here's how the weights for everything should break down:

OEM Setup
Front tire (255/35-19) - 24 lbs // Front wheel (19x9" ET29) - 20.05 lbs
Rear tire (275/35-19) - 26 lbs // Rear wheel (20x10" ET 40) - 23.65 lbs
Tire weight from tirerack.com

APEX Setup
Front tire (275/35-18) - 28.19 lbs // Front wheel (18x10" ET25) - 21 lbs
Rear tire (305/35-18) - 32.18 lbs // Rear wheel (18x11" ET44) - 21 lbs
Tire weight from nittotire.com

Truly a testament to how light the OEM wheels are, especially for 19s. Now lets see some track photos!

The 763M wheel weights are a known fact, no need to extrapolate:
19x9ET29 20.4lbs
20x10ET40 23.0lbs

Further, it seems quite unlikely for a 10" and a 11" wide wheel to weigh the same

Believe it! The higher offset of the 18x11" ET44 means less material in the center pad, which makes up for the added barrel width. The weights in the OP would actually put the 18x10" ET25 at 20.36 lbs. Although when we get this granular, things like wheel weights, and even tire pressure come into play. Either way, these are some very light wheels, both OEM and aftermarket.

So you're saying 6.3mm of material removed on the mounting pad offsets 25.4mm of material added on the barrel? Wow, I would not have thought.
