Well I regret to say that my april 2018 build M3 with DCT definitely has a steel driveshaft. Stuck a borescope above the heat shield and saw nothing but steel and center bearing.

When mine arrives, I'll throw it up on the lift and get some pics....May build 6 speed.

Who knows? The car drove great on my ED. I doubt it is very noticeable. More marketing for keeping the car "motor sports".

I will be in Germany finally on the 11th. I am hoping to pick up my car a week or so after that once I get registration and my damn European license. I'll get under it and see if I have the steel or CF D/S. Mine was built in March.

I'll say it...

That fucking sucks. Was assured multiple times M3 had been dropped since it's no longer necessary, and it didn't show in ETK until yesterday, retroactive to 11/17.

Your car appears to be the first documented F80 with a steel shaft.

Complete surprise, as I believe most of us here were under the impression that no F80 will get a steel shaft.

Did an ED last May 22 and confirmed that it still got the CFDS. I asked the technician and he confirmed it, after a long check. Mine was built on May 14, so it can be, whatever was on the line. Or maybe there is a certain build, but one thing for sure that, I don't really know how can they differentiate which one to use.

My buddy's November build 2018 M3 6-MT came with the steel driveshaft. My March build 2018 M4 M-DCT came with the CF drivehshaft.

That does suck. Maybe get a 2nd opinion, maybe it was misidentified.

Driver's side door panel/jamb above the rocker panels. I think its right where you would check tire info. If I remember correctly

Been in the auto business 30 years, I know what a steel driveshaft looks like. remember i said I can see the center bearing , the CFDS is one piece and does not use a center support bearing.

Seems implausible that they would retool for a steel driveshaft, only to switch back to CF driveshaft.

My dealer is going to have my car checked. Mine was built in March. I'm very curious and have been for a long time.

It was to be:

Dec 17 : 20 (5ea F80/2/3) random unsold allocations would have the Steel Driveshaft installed to allow for Production Conformy EU6d-Temp RDE testing and certification conducted.

April 18 - All allocations without customers assigned would have Steel driveshafts fitted to enable refitting of PPF if they were not sold by July.

July 18 - All F8x would be fitted with Steel shaft and further, PPF and new DME type installed in all cars under EU6d-Temp Emissions standard from the factory.

In March, it was decided to cease F80 production for all markets except US/CAN effective last week and WLTP/RDE Certifation was no longer necessary. It was stated they would not be installing the steel shaft on F80 due to the 8 figure cost to re-certify the type.
