Active Sound in the F80 M3 / F82 M4...?

Anyone think that BMW will simulate engine noise in the cabin by running it through the stereo like they do in the M5/6?

If they do would you care?

they will. that new M is going to be so dam quiet.

anyone here would rather have true engine noise, but i don't think its a huge deal to active sound . i would like to disable it and put a exhaust on. best case.

I'm not getting one if it has Active Sound but I'm cool if others aren't bothered at all by it.

Didn't realize that the M135i has Active Sound as well so the F8x M likely will as well.

I don't like anything fake. I even replace the fake chrome. I won't buy it if it has fake engine sounds through the sound system if it can't be turned off.

Please tell me that my 135 doesn't do that.

The E82 just has a passive sound baffle to increase the intake sound. It's not the active setup that the F10 M5 and apparently the F20 M135i have.

Maybe the F8x will have a choice to make it sounds like the S65.

I can understand BMW wanting to improve the sound feedback for drivers but I can not approve the use of synthesized sound through speakers. Just stick with the old school method of an induction sound tube or Porsche's Sound Symposer:

Don't need to drive it to know I don't want fake engine noise in any car that I will ever own. The same goes for the M135i and any other car no matter what it's other merits are.

BMW should be ashamed for putting phony speaker driven sound in their high performance marque cars.

Agree. Embarrassingly lame.

That said, if the press rags had never highlighted it, none of us would even know it's there. It's so subtle.

Don't worry it can also be coded off.

You have a M5 so anything about the car is going to be great. typical car owner.

I can see why some people don't like the idea, key word idea of it. i can also see why some people buy AMG over M cars etc.... the list goes on.

I have a F30 with Akrapovic exhaust I can hardly hear the exhaust inside the car and it sounds a lot more than stock on the outside. Since the F80 will use the same base car the same goes for that.

I bet a lot of owners would complain instead of the exhaust being too quiet if they didn't do anything like that. But I guess there are other ways of putting sound inside the cabin than using the speakers though...

Lol, I don't know what to do with that but one thing is for sure and that is that it is nothing I would do to my brand new F8x!

What if BMW made "Active Sound" E9x V8 engine-sound version?
I'm sure many will take it.

I agree, it's silly. I wonder if it's because they engineered the cars to be so quiet inside that they felt the driver should be able to hear the wonderful exhaust/engine notes?

Is it on with the radio completely turned down/off?

I didn't notice it after driving them in the M Performance School over the weekend. I did notice that rolling down the window a crack or being outside the car allowed one to hear the wonderful exhaust note though. Sitting inside the car is so plush and quiet though. But that's probably the idea when we're talking 5 and 6 series cars. They'd have to take out some of the sound deadening materials to achieve that.

One of the guys with a F10 M5 said his neighbor complained how loud his exhaust was when he started it in the morning. It's not quiet by any means unless you're inside the car obviously.

/end derail

Fake is fake and there is no defense to put fake noise in a car that should be the real thing in the performance segment. I almost choked on my granola the first time I read about the M5 getting fake engine sound. Truly shameful.

Active Sound is always on unless you hack and code it out or pull the fuse which disables the whole stereo system.

Hear it disabled: http://f10.m5post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=680384

its the fact that they were able to get enough engine noise without the use of active sound. should tell you something how BMW use to make M cars.

but the world is changing, now they need the use of sound robbing turbos.

Maybe to go along with the active sound they should have a timer that indicates your 0-60 time about a 1/2 second fast. They be bundled as the "Lame" package.

The idea is lame.....but in practice it is subtle and does kind of work (well in M6 guise at least). Hopefully the M3/4 won't need to resort to such measures.
