I did my first track day a couple of years ago and was hooked immediately. Since then, job changes, two children, and a new home have forced me to put my new hobby on pause.

For the last year, I've been slowly prepping my M240i for getting back out there. I'm 32 years old and in no rush. I most recently bought a tow vehicle, custom Cobra bucket seats, and a fire extinguisher for my car. Will I too face the jealousy comments if I dare to post pictures of my car online before I actually hit the track with it? Sadly, I'm sure I will.

Quit hatin' folks! It's a bad look for you.
Your M240i sounds really awesome! Sounds like you'll need a roll cage soon haha. Hit me up if you're interested!

I guess, sorry I wasn't trying to be a smart ass or anything though bro. Known plenty of guys with street/drag and track cars that have cages and never heard of a roll cage being a safety concern on the street. Which is why I was asking. Like you said though, maybe it's just the 6 point cages!?..

That is correct. Few posters already explained why. No problem

Love Imola Red; car looks great.

Wouldn't do the cage though...and I don't understand the idea of having a 4door car with a cage either.

Bro. This is a car that has never even once been on a track, but has an unpadded FULL CAGE with STOCK SEATS and SEAT BELTS. Is this build what you consider "near the safety level actually required to properly enjoy [HPDE]" as you said? Forget the track, this car is a deathtrap on the streets as it is.

OP, I too would caution you about running a full cage on track or street with the stock seatbelt. That said, love the build.

Say what rear spoiler are you using?

I'm sure as everyone has pointed out so pleasantly; there are things you can surely do to improve your safety in this car. Yet, from a visual standpoint - I think it's awesome. And you built it that way because you thought it was cool, and that's what matters. What's the point of being able to afford, and do whatever the hell you want to a car like this , if you have to follow all these rules like safety and stuff.. GO WILD! Screw the rules lol Awesome Car!

Before you track it:
1) Hi Temp Brake Fluid
2) Race Pads
3) Track tires

Nice build. Nice color. Be safe.

Fair enough, but I'm sure his car is far from being finished. Let's not judge a book by its cover. Maybe the timing and financial circumstances led to him to take care of the cage first. For example, if he is planning to put bucket seats and a harness in there, why install those first and have to pull them out again for the cage install? Sure, the stock seats likely had to come out anyways, but maybe the cage builder/installer did it for free as it is much more straightforward than dealing with aftermarket seat mounts, integrating factory electric sliders, etc.

I haven't considered putting a full cage in my car, but while we're on the subject, isn't there a way to make it reasonably safe for the street? Serious question. I haven't given it too much thought until now, but wouldn't a racing bucket seat along with a 5-point or 6-point harness keep the driver locked down enough to prevent his/her head from smashing into the cage? Also, how do side curtain airbags factor into the equation?

Any plans to increase power? e.g. Dinan, hybrid turbo.. has the roll cage added more weight or loss?

usually the front cage is built around the chosen seats and driver position, not afterward

why would you want a front cage in a car if its used on the street, also, god forbid it ever happens, but if the drivers head connects with the cage in an accident the cage manufacturer or installer would be in some seriously bad legal position ??? maybe its different in the US

It's obviously not ideal for street use, but if the car is eventually going to see mostly track and a little street (car shows, cars & coffee, etc.), then I can see it. I am not the right person to answer those legal questions, however, so no clue there.

Does the exact cage position really matter to the degree that one needs to have the specific racing seats already in place before cage installation? Seems a bit extreme to me. I'm thinking either someone is locked in their seat with the proper harness and unable to make contact with the cage at all or they are at risk regardless of cage position by using a standard safety belt...

Nice, really setting the bar on what is possible here. I really like how you framed you original post. Other members have been cagey about sharing build details, but not you!
