How terrible of an idea is it to switch to an X3 M?
i love my f80, but if i'm going to honest to myself- i'm not going to track it. lots of reasons, not least of which the amount of time it takes me to get anywhere outside of the city (Chicago). so given that, and the atrocious state of Chicago's roads, and the pretty slick new infotainment system the next generations have... maybe?

the cars are so different there really isn't a comparison.
I never figured out why people get fast SUVs though. maybe just get a base X5 rather than an expensive X3 ?

I disagree with you about not having tracks close by. I can think of two great ones that arent that far away from you. But, you obviously don't want to track etc and aren't really in love with the car so get what you think will fit your needs better.

base x5 is 350ish hp, and ginormous. "expensive x3" is just shy of 500hp and roughly the same size as a 3 series.

i didn't say they're not close by, i said they take forever to get to. closest (that i'm aware of) is in Joliet, about an hour and a half away without traffic, so about 2.5 hours away. it means a full day no matter what i do, and i don't have time for that unfortunately.

When you say “better suited for shitty Chicago streets”, do you mean potholes and road hazards?
If so, you may want to check what kind of tires the X3M is going to come with. I don’t know about the X3M, but the X5M had something like 30 or 35 series rubber - which is zero protection from a pothole fucking up your shit |

I get it though, I only have time for 2-3 track days a year. Just get what you really want and fits your needs. If it is an X3M then so be it. That is why BMW makes about 262 different models now. They are trying to appease everyone. Last edited by minn19; 03-06-2019 at 04:39 PM.. |

If I could have my SO drive an X3M it would be the perfect garage.

You have to stop and think about what are the things that you love about your F80 and what are the things you don't like about it.
Sometimes what makes you happy about a car doesn't always mean its faster or the one that is the most practical, or the most expensive etc... For myself i've had bigger cars (F10 550i), faster cars (F85 X5M), practical cars (F10 535xi) all within the last 5 years because of my growing family so i've sorta of "been there, done that". After living with my 18 F80 Comp 6MT for the last 8 months I can clearly say that I love this car more than the rest by a large margin. Why? It excites me when i drive it even if its going to the supermarket 15min away. I love the way it looks from all angles. After i park the car i tend to look back several times just to admire the beauty of it. Its ironically also the least expensive car out of the last couple of BMW's I've had. After i get out from a long drive my palms slightly sweaty because its exhilarating to drive and feels like an event when I get behind the wheel. My other cars in the past had bits and pieces of these things but none of them had them all like the M3 has for me. Its not the fastest, not the most luxurious, not the most practical, not the most expensive but it is the car I look forward to driving the most. While cars like the M550, X5M, M5 etc... might be faster, they might not excite you during your drives and over time you'll just end up wanting something else. That is the reason why I switch out so many cars within a short period of time. Just something to think about... Alan

Get what you want man. No need to rationalize it.
I would personally get a base American SUV that can tow and a competition car of some sort but I do something 12 track weekend a year and will go more if I can |

I drive an F80 and my wife drives a Cayenne. It's refreshing once in a while to say fuck you speed bumps and accelerate like you trying to catch some air instead of granny rolling over it.
