Cracked MPE Repair.

Did someone put a thread up about repairing a cracked MPE? Just noticed mines started to crack and I'm not sure if it's covered under warranty. I bought it from a dealer in London and don't know if it was fitted by BMW. I seem to remember someone putting quite an extensive thread up.

Found it on cutters. T5Pilot put the comprehensive fix in the post below.

Really poor that such an expensive piece of kit has this issue, they should have made it more robust, stainless steel would have done the job better and cheaper.

Added some contact information to the thread on cutters, to have the repair done if anyone needs it.

Also found out the guarantee is only valid for two years. Not three like the car.
It's classed as an accessory.

If its dealer purchased and installed then it should be covered by warranty.

It should but it isn't, getting mine replaced as a goodwill gesture. It's classed as an accessory.

Surely the Lemon law should help you out in the states, the product isn't fit for purpose.

You need to get it re-welded - AND add the additional support brackets as per my linked thread in the 2nd post. I've had no issues since.

Maybe the repair was not using proper weld wire material.
Contact Ryan on his IG: Fabchild. He is located in Riverside. He weld my E92 MPE.

Quite clearly the muffler can can't handle either the weight of the pipe and/or the vibrations.

Yes... definitely going to add those brackets. Are those 3/4" tubes? Top and bottom right?

22mm I believe on mine - But anything over 1/2" should do. I believe the key is doing top & bottom, not just one or the other.

Ok...thanks! I've ordered 3/4" tubes I assumed that was the size when I first saw these pics. Those are expected to arrive today. I spoke to a fabricator that can weld titanium about it. His concern is that he can't guarantee it wont crack again because the can likely has carbon build up inside he can't avoid (that cant easily be cleaned off and will be likely contaminants even with purging).

Hope these bars will help reduce stress.

Just got mine back from being repaired...

I also got support brackets added to help keep it from cracking again. Picked it up an hour ago. I will install and report back to see if it affects the sound and if any more rattling occurs.

Quick update:
I installed my newly repaired exhaust yesterday and wanted to report back on how it sounds after driving it around. First of all, the rattle is completely gone even at start up. No more high-pitched metallic ringing/rattling sound. Not sure if its just placebo effect, but the exhaust note seems cleaner too. It seems to have reduced that raspy tone on higher revs... tone just seems a lot more solid sound. I like it!

Overall, happy i did the repair with brackets. I just hope it holds up without cracking again since ive been told heat cycled Ti are weaker and prone to cracking more.

Nice job, very similar to mine. I can report that to date, I haven't had any further issues. You're not imagining the sound difference - It sounds better as the leaks have been sealed...

Did the tone of your exhaust change as well? Mine sounds a little different.... especially at high revs... not as raspy.
