Seems like a decent amount for 2k Km. What is your driving style? Lot of cold starts and short trips?

Smile FYI

Just an FYI - ECS Tuning/Turner Motorsport has their catch can system with the drain kit available for 15% off.

Link

I ordered their kit over the BMS option since it replaces all original factory hoses, includes all the necessary hose clamps in their proper sizes, and the drain system option to save from multiple disassembly efforts in the future.

Yes a lot cold starts and low temperature outside. I am happy with this on, a lot of dirt stopped to go in turbo1. My catch can is a cheap one, handmade brakets and it perfectly do his job.

Just drained mine after a week... seemed like a lot for only driving it 4 days out of the week.

Miles: ~38K
Drive Style: mostly city and short drives from home and work (4 miles). Usually 1 spirited drive a week (12 miles)

That Turner unit is beautiful.

I just ordered two from eBay that are identical to the Burger Motorsports unit. (One for the e36 M3)

I will fab up a mount from pre-preg CF and see how it works out

I just ordered the Turner unit. Liked build quality of the Turner (wasn’t crazy about BMS previous approach to mounting although this this one looks fine) and I like the drainage approach as I’m thinking I wii empty fluid more than in need to wipe out sludge - assuming of course the drain doesn’t plug up.. also liked the dipstick (but now understand its below the CF brace so doesn’t really work for this install but nice detail.

Just hoping there is clearance at the engine cover since I have very pretty IND cover) as stated by previous member. I notice some installs were done on cars with Eventuri intake systems. Looking at installing a DINAN system (like that it gets the cooler intake air from outside the engine compartment). The box cover seems smaller Thant the Eventuri so hope it fits without modification.

Appreciate any thought on the above particularly clearance with the air intake

No issues with fitment whatsoever.

The real test isn't what is in your catch can in my opinion. The only real way to tell if it's effective is for someone to pull their intake manifold after a specific number of miles and check the valves.

I had intended to do that experiment with my X5 that has the N55 in it which is similar to our S55's. I pulled the intake manifold at 50,000 miles to walnut blast the valves. At that mileage it really didn't seem necessary. There was some light carbon build up but not bad at all. Not enough that it would really affect performance in my opinion. I think around 80,000 would have been the right time to do it if I had to guess.

After cleaning the valves I installed the Turner Motorsport catch can. I monitored what it was catching for quite some time and it was very similar to the photos in this thread. Mostly water with just the slightest bit of oil mixed in. Unfortunately I'm selling the X5 so I won't be able to finish the experiment. My plan was to pull the intake manifold again at 100,000 miles and see the difference the catch can made.

I'm curious if the catch can even helps? The amount of oil I was getting in it was so minimal but I actually wonder if catching all the condensation/water that it was collecting could actually make the build up on the valves worse?? My thinking is that maybe that water actually partially cleans the valves? I don't know but it would seem that when that water hits the hot valves it would turn to steam and help break up the carbon and now by catching that water in the can instead that reaction could be gone.

I really wish I was keeping the X5 to find out but I have too many cars as it is and it needs to go. Has anyone here had a catch can on their car for a significant amount of time and pulled the intake manifold to see if it's actually helping?

After my experience with the X5 I won't be adding one to my M3. The walnut blasting is easy enough to do every 80,000 miles. Having a catch can might extend that to 100,000? but I think no matter what it's gonna need to be done at some point regardless.

Maybe the advantage of catching that stuff and not allowing it to lower your octane is worth it? Or maybe we are falling victim to a really great marketing scheme?

I am not an automotive engineer, but I doubt the light condensation that is picked up by the OCC's would significantly contribute to any valve cleaning. I think the main reason the intake valves are clean has to do with the better design of the PCV systems found on the newer generation of BMW engines. However, I think the OCC still helps, and for ~$200 (on $75k+ automobiles) it is very cheap preventative maintenance, especially when combined with other intake valve cleaning tools like CRC GDI Valve & Turbo cleaner (which I do with every oil change at 5k mile intervals).

I have 47k+ miles on my car now. The OCC has been installed in my car since 3k miles or so. I do oil changes every 5k miles and use the CRC GDI stuff prior to every oil change. While not a direct contributor to intake valve cleaning, I also always put Top Tier gas in my car as well - thus contributing to the overall cleanliness of the fuel system in the car. I believe that those preventative maintenance practices, along with the better design of the PCV system should keep my intake valves clean so I personally don't intend to take apart my intake to take a peek. I don't think it is necessary based on how my car has been running - which is as strong as when I first got it new.

If anyone's interested, I just put up a brand-new BMS S55 M2C/M3/M4 oil catch can in the Classifieds. Never installed or even taken out of the box.

How do you apply the CDC GDI cleaner in the F8x?

Hello everyone. After about a year of driving (about 12,000 miles) with the Turner catch can, I finally checked it for the first time.

Here's what I found. I do live in SoCal and there are very little temperature fluctuations. This may explain why I have almost no condensation pooling in the can. There was some oil and debris at the bottom of the can; just not enough to pool. I imagine if there was water trapped in the can from condensation, it would look similar to what some other people posted here.

Anyways, cheers and happy holidays to everyone.

That doesn't look like a BMS OCC Kit. They use the OEM fitting so you don't have to remove it.
