Winter wheel width question

I'm looking for peoples experience running a wide rim/tire combo for a winter setup. 18x10 etc (275/40 ish)
I understand it's supposed to handle snow better if the wheel is skinnier, but due to space, I'd rather not get a separate set of wheels for winter. I'd rather get my 18x10s then just swap the tires each season.

Thanks
