I'm ordering a new set of nuts for the strut clamp and I remember when I was underneath the car...the DRIVER side was 16MM socket. The passenger side is 17MM socket. But the part # is identical on both sides...so-did the shop really do a bad job installing this?

Referring to the nut they are pointing to here:

They are both the same size so something is off there.. The bolts should have been replaced as well. If you ordered your kit from one of the online places (getbmwparts or bmwpartspros) they should have included all of the fasteners that should have been replaced.

This issue has just made it to another level of f**ery.

After raising a bit of hell, the dealership service manager called us and said they'd "diagnose" the issue for $690. That was their final offer and that didn't include repair costs. They said if BMW confirmed it's an issue, they'll refund the $690. Never going back to this dealer again. Unbelievable. They said it doesn't matter if another BMW dealership did the work. They do not stand behind other dealer's work. I get it if it was a private shop, of course, but this seems a bit wild. Even the dealer where we had it done was scratching their heads. They also went on to tell me that they stand behind the warranty for any of these cars, and they'd gladly take my business. So sad.

I can't wait to post that it's all been resolved and exactly what it was sometime next week.

Update. Just picked up my car. Here's the official response telling me to go back to the other BMW dealer. The other dealer couldn't believe it, they said they take care of anything as long as it's done by a BMW certified shop and especially if it's a BMW part (and it is, BMW HAS kit):

I have the same noise after camber plates were put in. Gonna get the shop who did the installation to look at it tomorrow. Let me know what the problem end up being and I'll keep you posted on my progress here too.

It's so annoying. The clicking is now only the most minor thing. I loosened and re-torqued the "one time use" strut pinch bolt and that part has actually subsided but from inside the car you can hear a popping/clunking noise. It sounds bad. Only at slow speeds, though.

Yup same here. Only really hear it at low speeds. My mechanic said this was pretty common and it has to do with the top shock mount. He admit it was his installation error and he's going to fix it on Friday. I'll keep you posted on what he does and whether or not it gets fixed.

I brought it to a shop that said they were extremely cognizant of the issue and guaranteed it wouldn't be an issue.

The concern I have now is...what will they do if it's broken from mis-install? What if the springs were ruined? I've seen them get ground down from sitting incorrectly. You'd think this would be the most straight forward and simple install. I never even removed the top mount when doing the spring install on my F80, it was super easy. I was just trying to keep the warranty in tact. I should've just done it myself.

Well the shop who installed it just re-installed everything and replaced the gaskets and bolts again to perfect torque spec on every single bolt and...

---it's still making that thudding noise inside the cabin of the car when turning lock to lock at slow speeds or at a stand still---

...they are going to try loosening and re-tightening the steering rack bolts but other than that, any other suggestions?

What kind of noise came back? How long until it came back? I've put on about 500 miles since re-install (mostly highway) but the popping noise that sounded like it was coming from the dash has not returned. I only get a slight click that you can only hear outside and only when steering lock > lock. Which I think is OK.

Yes that's the noise that returned, the slight click. HOWEVER, the noise initially came on during a hard track session. Strangely enough, it disappeared after another harder session... so I guess reinstall is the answer?

Maybe it just needed to settle? That sounds odd. Mine came and never went away until we re-installed everything and changed out all the nuts/bolts (again). Could be that the spring isn't seated on the perch properly...

Hmm, I'm not sure. I definitely needed the reinstall as the noise before remained constant. But it was interesting how after the reinstall, the noise disappeared, came back, then disappeared again. For now I'll consider it "fixed" but I'll keep an eye on it.

Adding to this because my car had the same clicking noise issue while doing stationary or slow speed turning the steering wheel. I originally thought it was a defective top hat which was strange with only 7K miles on the odometer but I swapped it out with a new one. The noise persisted. Turns out the pinch bolt that hold the strut is one time use and the recommended 60ft lbs isn't enough torque. I installed it at that torque setting and the clicking noise was worse than ever. Then i loosened the bolt (while I had the jack under the brake rotor to give it load or else the strut shifts out) and re-tightened it (full send) and the noise immediately went away.

hi, mine too was making this noise (video link attached) when turning left or right in slow to standstill turns. Took it to the dealer and this is the fix they applied (invoice attached). So far the car has made no more noise. maybe this helps others as well. I am also ob dinan springs from the dealer.

That’s the same fix I am referring to that worked for me. The pinch bolt should be replaced and/or tightened more. The factory rating of 50ft lbs isn’t enough. I had the SAME exact sound as in the video and it developed 7K miles after my spring install
