Had a similar, but slightly opposite experience a few weeks ago as well when my wife had a new 5-series loaner with 10.2" touchscreen... I was skeptical of the touchscreen integration after a lot of negative press on the forums, but the gadget guy in me really liked it . And this is just using the BMW side since I did not link to CarPlay in the loaner.

However, what was a bit of a let down to me was the size increase - first time I had seen a 10.2" monitor in the flesh. To me, the size increase was nice, but still not as "impressive" as I thought it would be - definitely not worth the effort to physically modify it (i.e. cut/trim it or the dash) to get it to fit properly IMHO. I don't think my OCD could take it. Different strokes I guess....

Regardless of monitor selection, I think OEM is definitely the way to go - especially if you can get a good price that is competitive with aftermarket units. All of the aftermarket units I have seen seem to have very "buggy" software and I question the hardware reliability after several months of sun/heat sitting on the dash.
You are the first to say that about the OEM 10.2" Screen so many of us have put in their F3x.

Then again, you are also one of the very few to think the touchscreen is worth it in its current location.

Who knows.... If I can find a reasonably priced OEM 10.2" touchscreen that can be physically modified in a manner that won't offend my OCD, I may take the plunge .

Also keep in mind that we are all creatures of habit. The iDrive interface has been around for a long time and is a very good user interface for drivers (several other OEMs have mimicked the basic interface). We are all used to the current iDrive interface so I think it will just take some time - remember all the negative press iDrive initially had way back when it was first introduced? BMW has held off on a touchscreen interface longer than most OEMs and I think they finally gave into "peer pressure" from the industry in order to stay "current" with the average car buyer. It also would not surprise me if the new G-series cars are more ergonomically friendly for touch in the future as well. I know the new 5-series loaner I drove was better than the F80 in that regard.

So I just installed the screen protector mentioned earlier in this thread and will second that it works VERY WELL when addressing smudges from fingerprints. Fingerprints are barely visible and only when the screen is off (which is rare when I am in the car). With the screen in normal use, I have to look really hard to see the smudges, even in direct sunlight. Also, the small micro fiber cloth that comes with the screen protector is perfect to keep in the car for the occasional wipe down when I clean the car.

For those of you with very active OCD when it comes to smudges/fingerprints on your screen (like me), this screen protector (or one with similar properties) should alleviate concerns about fingerprints with normal touchscreen usage in a car .

Sweet!

Just read that Apple has announced iOS 12 will officially support 3rd party navigation apps like Waze and Google maps in Apple CarPlay, I have a feeling I will be using Apple CarPlay as my main screen from then on.

I can't imagine using CarPlay without touch, the interface is MADE for touch.

I just installed mine and this old thread was extremely helpful.

For me my arm easily reaches the screen from where I sit and I use Apple CarPlay almost exclusively so it was worth it. If anyone is interested, here’s a list of compatible BMW part numbers for the touchscreen:

https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/partxref?q=65508709339

I managed to find a used one in eBay.

One note that might help anyone attempting this in regards to using BimmerCode for enabling the touchscreen.

If you've ever had Apple CarPlay coded in via the USB method, BimmerCode will error out when attempting to connect to the headunit module. Apparently there's something in the way that the USB coding works that causes issues when BimmerCode attempts to read the headunit information, making it essentially useless when it comes to coding in the touchscreen.

The work around is to either code it in manually using E-SYS (I had BimmerTech take care of this remotely) or reset your headunit to the default settings using E-SYS, code in the touch screen functionality (and anything else headunit related you'll be wanting) using BimmerCode, and reinstall Apple CarPlay with the USB method afterwards.

Hopefully this helps someone else if they get stuck in the middle of this retrofit like I did.

Yes you can do the mod. I'm about to do this to my 2016 M4.

I actually bought the kit including the ID6 module from OP.

Wont it also require a complete upgrade of the head unit as well?

Yes that's correct. As you'll read in the thread, if you have ID6 already but NO touchscreen then it's a simple swap (of just the screen) as the OP mentioned/documented. If you have ID4, you'll need to swap out the unit to ID6, and then the screen to a touchscreen. The latter is what I'm doing.

I would only do the swap if I can have gesture control and upgrade to the 10 inch screen. Tommy L Garage did the screen upgrade and the units on eBay around $700 i think.

Other than that its a waste just to add touchscreen when both hands are always on the wheel.

To each their own. You won't be able to get gesture control in a F8x. Touchscreen is a nice addition, admittedly I still use the iDrive controller primarily, but it's nice to have both.

Thank you for having this post online, I just upgraded my 2017 330ix with non touch to touch with the screen from a 2018 and the simple coding process. Couldn't have been simpler.
