Haha. I know a little. Not that bad with cars . I am looking at the one you are referring to next to the firewall. Here is a zoomed out picture.

Oh so sorry! Just looked like the main coolant one and also mine seemed like it was only water and not coolant.

In regards to the level, it looks fine from the photo.

You are nowhere close to having to worry. Both times on my car, when the intercooler blows it dumps all the coolant through the engine. That reservoir was bone dry and after driving the intercooler would be warm where it should be nice and cool from the coolant movement.

Anybody here have any insight as to why it has blown twice on my car? Is there any other part of the circuit that can be causing the failure?

What coolant is this running, regular anti-freeze?

Well I don't know about some of the other commenting, but after teardown what blew my motor was bending a rod as a result of water ingestion from the damaged intercooler. So I would advise caution.

My new motor arrived on Tuesday to the dealer, they are working on it. I hope to have my M back on Friday.

Double-check with your service manager on this; unless things have changed recently, parts/work completed under warranty will not get the additional 2 year / unlimited mileage warranty. The new motor will only carry a warranty until your original warranty expires.

No, actually you won't. BMW changed that just before I left; once the car goes out of "new car warranty", the parts warranty will expire with it. If you purchased this yourself, outside of warranty, you would then have your two years of parts warranty, and two years on the labor (assuming it was performed at a BMW dealer).

Double check with your SA. If you're lucky enough and he/she believes this to be the case, and you go in with an engine issue, should the dealer warranty anything, the writer and tech would end up eating the repair - which is not your concern and lucky for you

Can't say categorically, but my experience with BMW has been for same type issues, BMW is pretty good about covering as a goodwill repair....never tested this though with a $25K motor and hope to never find out.

For those who have had the issue, can you post your manufacture dates please? Maybe just a string of bad intercoolers.

Glad it worked out for you OP and Pokerpot , hope neither of you have any more issues.

It seems between this thread and the other one, it's affecting all model years from 2015 and up.

How did the engine replacement go and how does the car feel with a brand spanking new engine?!

Do they reset your odo or anything of that sort? I know I’m being silly by asking but never had an engine replaced.

I wonder wth you all are doing with your cars reading how many issues you all are having with coolant leaking, rear diff issues, spinning of the crank hub, ... are these cars being seriously abused? It’s like that meme “am I a joke to you?”. BMW builds a nice engine + car that is already being pushed to the limit and first thing most do is pushing it further to the limit. In this case however since BMW agreed to replace the engine the car was stock?

Also if BMW is just replacing the cooler with the exact same one but fresh out of the box, how exactly does that resolve the problem? Or dud they redesign it?

LOL, fortunately this applies to all marques, not just BMW.

BMW did not reset the odo when a family member's E90 325i needed a new motor at 10k miles.

I assume that's because they consider the odo to be relevant also to chassis miles and all the non-engine bits that are associated with it.

Has anyone with a leak actually had the dealer show them where the part was leaking from or inspected it themselves. If it's different leaks it could just be bad luck. If they all tend to leak from the same spot it could be a design flaw.

How hard is it to rev the part so it doesn't leak after it's been around so long already. I mean, they revised the taillights twice but can't fix leaky IC...

They normally add an extra odometer and label them engine and chassis.
