Scratches on new 2018 F80 at dealer delivery

I just need to vent a little and get this off my chest...

So this past Friday, I went to pick up my brand new 2018 F80 ZCP at my dealer. This is the car that have have been dreaming of owning since before I had my license. I could not sleep the couple nights before picking it up, feeling like a kid on Christmas eve.

Unfortunately with timing, we had our family vacation planned for this weekend and were supposed to leave on Thursday night, and the car was scheduled to arrive at the dealer this past Friday. Boy did I want to cancel vacation, but I knew I couldn't. I called both my SA and BMW to see if there was any way to get it delivered sooner. They managed to get it to the dealership on late Wednesday afternoon. Things were looking very good. My plan was to pick it up the next day. However, to my disappointment the MSO did not arrive. My SA told me it did not get delivered it should be there Friday morning via FedEx.

Negotiations with my wife now began, and she knew how long I have waited for this dream car of mine that she agreed we would leave Friday night so I could get the car Friday morning. Awesome! Aside from wanting to get the car as soon as possible, I also feared it sitting at the dealer for longer than it needed to. You hear horror stories of what happens at these places.

Friday morning I hurried over to the dealer. As I drove through the dealer lot to park, I saw her! She was beautiful! Still with the protection wrappings on just the way I like it.

I met with my SA and chatted for what seemed like forever while I anxiously waited for FedEx to hopefully deliver the MSO so I could take delivery. Thank goodness it finally arrived! While I had to wait for them to get the paperwork ready, my SA said lets go look at the car. I was so pumped!

As we walked the lot towards where I saw it parked, my excitement continued to grow. Then I saw one of the car wash guys driving it to a spot to park it. The protective coverings were now removed. I felt a bit of unease as I'm use to watching the protective wrapping come off in front of me from my previous BMW deliveries. Plus I did not want or ask to have it washed. Anyway, my SA told him to pull the car back into the bay so I could get a good look at it.

I was in awe! The tanzanite blue looked amazing! I started on the driver's side panel taking in every beautiful detail this car had to offer. It was everything I hoped for and more! While in a dream like state I continued to walk towards the back of the car in the direction of my SA. When I got to the back, I noticed something from the distance on the top right side of the trunk. My initial thought was it looks like scratches, but that's impossible, its brand new and was just covered. Perhaps its just threads from the towels they used to dry it I thought to myself. As I got closer, I realized they were not towel threads unfortunately. They were scratches. My joy and excitement quickly dissipated and was replaced with nausea. There was one long scratch several inches long and a couple smaller ones next to it. I ran my hand and fingernail over them and could feel just how deep they were. I wanted to vomit. I called my SA over. He was in shock as well. The car wash guy claimed it was there and they sent pics to someone at the dealer to find out what to do. At this point I'm realizing they probably wanted to try to cover it up before I had a chance to see it.

To say the least, my excitement was gone and now my mind was just racing with a million thoughts. How could this be?! How did this happen?! What do I do?!

Not to drag this on, I will try to end this rant. My SA told me not to worry and he talked with his manager and they would have their body shop correct it while we did the paperwork and it be would fine. The ended up having him wet sand it. I can still see the all the scratches and now swirl marks too. Ugh! They told me when I bring it back for the 1200 mile service that will repaint the whole trunk and it will look as good as new.

Do you think this is the best method? Do you think the paint will all match or will I notice a difference? Will they have to do the side panels as well to blend it?

Part of me is debating if I should just leave it as is and not have them mess around with it anymore potentially making it worse. I think I would rather just live with it the way it is. Otherwise, I think I would rather find my own bodyshop/detailer to correct it. Feel free to give me your thoughts and opinions.

Is it possible to just get a whole new trunk lid to replace this one? Even if I could get it replaced, do I run the same risk of possibly seeing variations in paint color?

Also, can you believe they would not take a dollar off the price for this issue? They just said they will take care of it. And they denied taking my $1k coupon for the ultimate Japan trip offer.

I really want to contact BMW NA to complain about the whole thing.

I'm also debating how to handle the survey when I get it. I now that effects the dealer and their compensation. I don't want to do anything to hurt my SA as he did noting wrong. But I'm annoyed about the scratches and how it was handled. I think the general manger should have come and spoke to me directly. This was my 6th BMW from this dealer, and he did not even come out to talk to me.

That's it for now. In the meantime, I'm hoping to put all this negativity behind me and focus on what amazing car this is and how grateful I am to have it. I just keep telling myself, it's only scratches, and nothing major. Be thankful and enjoy the car!

Hopefully I will get time to post some pics of this beauty!

Pics or it didn't happen.

However, if it's a brand spanking new car, replacing the boot with a new one won't leave you with a noticeable colour difference as the car wouldn't have had enough time to fade, etc.

I would flat out refuse them respraying it as it will be left to the resprayer (more than likely not their workshop) to get the colours perfect.

Nothing short of a new boot will suffice if it was my vehicle. And it wouldn't take BMW long to source one, so your problem should be fixed relatively quickly.

Here is one I quickly took when I first saw the scratch. It's a little tough to make out what you are looking at. The pick shows the top panel of the trunk with the longest scratch going across. You also see the garage door reflecting on the freshly washed car.

holy shit. Looks like repainting the trunk is the only option. Just make sure tell them to not touch the rest of the car incase they add more swirls during the "detailing" process after repaint...

How could they possibly think that it was acceptable to present the car like that?

I would have blown up deluxe if the first I knew of it was delivery day.

And I agree with Alan, I would be very strong on insisting that they never "detail" your car again. My dealer knows that, aside from servicing, etc, no other part of the car is to be touched, as I've had far too many issues with swirls and scratches from the whatever disgruntled apprentice is tasked with washing the cars prior to handing the keys back.

With the picture of the protective covering on the trunk at the dealership it seems like its good evidence that someone at the dealership screwed up. It seems worth contacting BMW NA and asking for their recommendation on how to make it right.

That's a huge scratch! Have them fix it (repaint or new trunk) and give you $$$ back or something.

Why do they need to wait for the 1200 mile service?
You’d be surprised how many cars get repainted at VPC.
Just have them repaint the trunk. I would never have let them wet sand it though. They probably made it worse and ruined your clear.

I’m pretty sure it was the car wash. With the plastic protective sheet, highly doubtful BMW factory let it go that way and then put plastic to cover it up.

Something could have scratched the film as well but my suspicions the car wash guy.

on my previous car with a dash cam installed I mistakenly told the dealer to go ahead and wash my car because I was desperate.... I went home to review the dash cam footage and it made me cringe seeing how and what they used to wash the cars. Never making that mistake again....

i wonder why people are telling you to get a new boot/trunk. a new part would have to be painted anyway, so you're not avoiding that step. repainting the original part will be the same thing.

sorry that your much-anticipated moment was ruined.

Because they’re thinking BMW Germany will paint it with a confirmed color match. Highly doubt it that the dealer or BMWNA is going to commit to that, as much as it sucks to be the OP.

Cars come into port and get repainted ALL THE TIME due to shipping issues. They don’t ship the cars back to Germany.

Ouch that looks awful. Looks deep also. Honestly, a reputable body shop can easily repaint that. I would ask BMW to throw in extra freebies for the depreciation from the respray.

Dark paints aren't difficult to match. But since the dealer is incompetent-enough to damage the car, dishonest-enough to lie about it, and inconsiderate-enough to offer no compensation beyond the repaint, they are not trustworthy-enough to be allowed to get it repaired at a shop of their choosing.

If I were you, I would've refused delivery, filed a case with BMW NA, found the best, most recommended body shop in town, and asked them for a written estimate to hand to the dealer. Then I would politely inform them they owe me a good loaner while my car is being repaired.

All but the first step are still possible. That's the route I would recommend. Again, dark colors are fairly easy to match.

Similar thing happened to me on my f90. Had them replace both B pillars before I took delivery. Just tell them to contact BMW NA and replace the entire trunk with one that was from another Tanzanite Blue.

Shouldn't have taken the delivery until the entire trunk was replaced with one that was painted from Germany. Any sanding/filling/repainting will not match 100% and it will de-value the car.

First of all, you shouldn't have taken the delivery with a scratch like that. Once you take the delivery the ball is no longer in your court. With a scratch like that, the dealer would not be able to sell the car at all to anyone, so they would be forced to repair the scratch to factory conditions.

The fact that they told you to come back in at the 1,200 mile service is an indication that they are not serious about fixing the scratch. Any reputable dealer would've offered to fix it right away and before you take delivery. I'd push for them to fix it right now and if they can't get it back to factory condition, contact BMW NA.

Trunks do not come painted from Germany!!! Even if they did, you risk variations in the paint as the entire car is painted at once at the factory.

A competent body shop can fix this good as new. But you are done with your dealer. Do not go back and consider filing a small claims suit.

Oh and surveys do nothing to a dealer these days. It is loyalty - so never buy from them and it will hurt them more.

Ps, contact the GM of the dealer and BMW NA immediately. And no, I would not have accepted the car and yes, this sucks. But as noted, the right body shop can make it perfect.

Ps tanzanite rocks.

My dealer presented my car to me on delivery day with a very obvious scratch on the bumper and I found more on the hood the following morning. The dealer buffed out the bumper scratch and I buffed out the hood scratches myself. Some detailers just suck.

They did this after you bought five cars from them? And now they want you to wait until after the 1200? That's just fuxing nuts! Mine is TzB, and you CANNOT "touch up" TzB. They have to respray & clear the lid as a panel, and do it again if they fux it up. And no question about a loaner, better be a 6er as well. Keep us posted on this OP, and I bet I'm not the only one who wants to know what dealer this is.
