If you've seen the movie The Crow, you may remember a scene where the bad guy is throwing knives at him and he dodges out of the way. I had that experience yesterday.

On the road, a flattened aluminum can gets kicked up from the car in front of me. In a split second, there's a vertically rotating buzzsaw heading for my hood, a car beside me, and a car up to the left in the turning lane. Nowhere to go - except to flick the car two feet to the left and back straight, see the can spin past 4" from my passenger windows, and clear the turning car by about a foot. On later inspection, not a scratch.

It was great - M4 FTW!

Good job? Although if choosing between taking a hit and potentially performing the pit maneuver on an innocent bystander I'd probably chose the former. Hard to say in the heat of the moment.

When cops hit a chased vehicle from the rear corner to cause them to spin out. Was the car to the left heading in same direction or do you mean it was an oncoming left turn lane in the opposite direction?

Ah, got it. The turning car was stopped waiting to turn, so was simply a stationary object preventing an escape into the turning lane.

The most interesting things to me were a) the M's ability to execute the maneuver, and b) the freeze frame quality of Can! > evaluate situation > green light for escape > execution.

Cheers

I always have similar experiences, except not with cans, but with cigarette butts. I feel like butts have a tendency to bounce as they hit the ground at highway speeds. Unfortunately I have noticed that our lower grill is a giant perfect scooper of bouncing cigarette butts. I have found a new hatred for people who throw their butts out the window... even as a former smoker.

That's awesome. I'm glad it worked out.

The last time I had that happen, it was in a tunnel and another car kicked up a lane divider pylon and I had no room to maneuver. Car had to tank the hit. Left a mark on the clearcoat but no dent thankfully

I have had more than one end up on top of the wipers and had to remove someone else's nasty cigarette butt from my car. Why is it so hard to just put them in an ashtray (either a factory installed one or an aftermarket one) instead of littering, potentially damaging another car, causing an accident, etc.

Because even for smokers, they don't want to deal with the smell of cigarette butts in the car, or with the hassle of cleaning it...
