Does European Delivery lower resale value of your car?

Since the base MSRP of your car is lower, does an equally equipped European Delivery car have a lower resale value than a US delivery?

For example the base sticker price of an F80 M3 in the US is $62,000 and a European Delivery base sticker price is $57,710. If both cars are identical and have $5,000 in options, the total sticker of the European Delivery will still be $4,000 less.

So when you go to sell the car down the road, you may have the same options but when you go to show someone your window sticker it will look like the car is worth less and therefore you wouldn't get as much for it (or at least you have to justify to each potential buyer why you think your car is worth as much as another that has a $4,000 higher sticker price).

Is this the case, or am I overthinking this?

No because generally you can get much bigger discounts on cars in stock/on the lot. They all depreciate the same, which also is generally a lot.

But the price you pay has nothing to do with resale. The resale value is calculated on your MSRP. So if you're MSRP is $4k lower wouldn't your resale be lower also?

Resale is based in market prices of comparable cars, not MSRP of your car. You are overthinking.

Lease residuals are calculated on MSRP. Resale has nothing to do with MSRP as others stated here. That is all market driven.

The price/value of any used good (including cars) is always determined by the market.

As someone wisely noted above, you may be over thinking it. If you want to do European Delivery, then go for it - don't let this concern keep you from having the European Delivery experience. It's really a pretty amazing experience from start to finish - Going to the Welt to pickup a car made just for you, touring the Museum, touring the Munich Factory, then getting to drive your own M car in Germany (and the Alps).

Keep the car in good shape, and you'll get market value down the road. If a buyer down the road low balls you because of ED, or what the MSRP was, then tell that buyer to move on.

MSRP is a small factor but only option based. A base m3 may be 61k, a loaded could hit 80k, so based on that it should resell used for more.

Somewhat related - European delivery brings up additional questions at resale - was car property broken in during the Europe tour? Was car damaged at all when shipped back to US? Clear bra probably not installed when new so did car suffer paint blemishes? Was it rung out on the ring before break-in service? All small issues except to the most OCD buyers. Doubt any of that would effect resale but it could add extra scrutiny during PPI.

Your generous aunt gives you, her favorite nephew, a two bedroom condo in NYC for the cost she paid 20 ago - 500k. She doesn't want you to worry about too much debt. Market comps suggests your apartment is worth 1.2m.

Would you sell it for less to account for her generosity? Do buyers of your condo have any argument to lower their price?

Those concerns exist even if the car was not Euro Delivery. Was it broken in properly, break-in service completed on time, any accidents, abused, etc.

Non-European Delivery cars also get damaged during shipping. That's why all major ports have body shops and paint booths on-site. It happens a lot more than people realize, and it's all fixed before the car arrives at the dealerships. As long as the damage is not over a certain cost, it's not reported to the dealer or customer. All fixed at port.

European delivery shouldn't matter much. Neither does window sticker. You could have a loaded up convertible M4 with DCT, but its still probably worth less than a similar F80 6 speed with carbon roof. Just the way the used market is.
