I believe your only options are to straight-up code it out, or buy this: http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho....php?t=1090406

I thought there was a harness that was available to deactivate the active sound on the standard sound system. I will have to search for the suppler of that harness system.

When you are listening to the stereo kinda loud, does the ASD volume go up to or is it now inaudible due to turning up the stereo?

I should also mention that there is one downside to unplugging the module. And that is that a dealership will be unable to program your car with it unplugged. So keep that in mind if any programming related recalls or service actions pop up in the future, or if you need to have a control module replaced under warranty.
Wouldn't you just be able to plug it back it for servicing? Th epics make it seem like its easy to unplug and plug back. When I had a module to allow for the Z4 top to retract at up to 15mph, i was able to disable it very easily.

While I haven't messed around with it, I'm sure you could fairly easily disconnect the harness with a long screwdriver or similar tool while the trunk panel is still in place. Plugging it back in would be a little tougher, and would probably require the left trunk panel to be removed. Not that it's all that hard to do, but it's something to keep in mind.

I mentioned it mainly because BMW has the tendency to initiate "service action" campaigns (especially on newer models) that often get done without a customer's knowledge. You might drop the car off for an oil change and they end up trying to update the vehicle software for an emissions or functionality related reason at BMW NA's request. They wouldn't be able to with the ASD unplugged, so it would create a hassle for all involved. Just want people to be aware of this.

its been a couple of weeks since I disconnected the ASD and I am going to keep it off. I have the M performance exhaust and it is loud enough. The sound isn't as full or robust, but I think you can hear the burps and gurgles more clearly with it off.

I'd agree with BMWM.D. that connecting the module will be quite a bit harder than disconnecting it. Its really a squeeze to get even part of your hand and arm in there.

I was thinking that I would just let the service people know that it is disconnected and if they had any issues updating the software, they could reconnect it themselves. I am sure they could take off panel in a fraction of the time it would take me.

This is a topic of great interest to many F8x owners. A full-on photo step-by-step DIY would be a most useful and appreciated contribution to the community.

You can make out the white electrical connector on the ASD module (where my finger is pointing) to get a better idea of where it is. This was taken with the rear trunk plastic trim cover removed, and the left trunk liner panel just pulled back a little at the rear. You can see the heat sink fins on the module and the black mounting bracket.

I'm still unsure where in the trunk to find all of this - can somebody post a pic of the fully-assembled trunk with an arrow of where to start?

You were in the right area of the trunk on your first attempt.

I removed the rivet on the left side of this picture and the hook/rivet as well.

I also removed the hard plastic piece where the trunk latches (4 rivets)

I was then able to pull the trim panel(first picture) far enough away from the tail light to be able to reach in and remove the locking plug.

Apologies for the seemingly silly question, but how did you get the rivets out so cleanly? Did you use a rivet tool?

It is just a plastic tab. Gently insert a flat head screwdriver between the small and large tab and that should pop the smaller tab up, then just pull them out.

Thanks for that!!! I must be thick, or this is not as simple as it looks. I removed the rivets on the plastic panel after seeing your message, but the panel won't come off fully, just loosens. I removed the other two rivets on the left-side of the trunk, but the trim won't even budge.

Did you only remove the small tab that pops up? The rivet is two separate plastic bits. The larger tab on the rivet needs to come out too. Again, just slide the flathead behind and pull it out with your fingers. If you seperate the small tab from the large tab, they will come out with fairly little resistance. There are 4 rivets on the plastic part along the trunk lid. Three more rivets hold the fiberous liner; one you have to stick your head in the trunk to see, it is behind the tailight portion of the liner, the other two are located next to the arm of the trunk lid, one disguised as a hook and the other is right above. Last is the torx screw all the way inside the trunk where there is a mount or tie down point. There is also a bracket right above the amp the you can remove, I did not, I just squeezed my hand in there with the help of the same flat head I'd been using to move the clip and wiggle out the connector.

Big thanks to all contributors! Disconnected the ASD module and will never go back. Love the real sound of this engine.

Thanks again, man! I pretty much did all of what you said above, except for the screw all the way inside the trunk that has a tie-down thing. I will do that now. Where exactly is this ASD module in relation to the trunk? Thanks again for your help!

You guys really find it that bothersome? It's probably because I drive w/ the windows down 95% of the time. It doesn't matter if it's 90 degrees out or 45 degrees out here in CA I drive with the windows down with the A/C or heater on according to weather. It's only up when it's raining/pouring but not sprinkling..

It is located at the lower left portion of the trunk. There are pics on the previous pages of this thread. It is the unit not directly under the metal bracket, but the one exposed to the left of it.

Found it! Hopefully, one last q: Can I pull the connector using the wires, or do I have to release a lock first (gray looking tab), not sure how else to explain it. Thanks again!!!

This clip is a little different. You need to push the tab down on the gray clip and pull the black bar up fully then the connector will pull right out. Gently wiggling instead of pulling on the wires is my recommendation. Pulling wires is never a good idea.
