I thought the cost of this service was the cost of parts. It is a rather easy and straightforward process. Granted there is quite a bit of things that must be removed to get to the spark plugs. I do most of my own service work because this car is not that much harder to work on than a 90's car. I have never been a fan of doing transmission work so when the service for that comes I will gladly pay for that.

Like most service jobs, it’s almost usually the labor rates that raise the costs. I’m with you, with the exception of major engine repairs or transmission repairs, I’m usually the one who likes to learn and do on my own. Working on my vehicles is rather cathartic for me.

I'm planning on doing my plugs on my next oil change. I called up 2 local dealers and an indy shop for pricing. $1080 and $1630 were what the dealer quoted. Indy shop was $625.

I also checked prices for some of the services that I need done.
Service (Dealer 1, Dealer 2, Indy) Parts cost
Oil Change ($200, $180, $150) $91
Brake Flush ($159, $168, $98) $12
Rear Diff ($145, $275, $180) $45

I'll be doing all this work myself

So I'll be doing this DIY this weekend. Looking forward to it. I went with the $37 OE Bosch plugs. Don't need the NGK's because I'm only on a CS Tune and the car runs beautifully. Will post some photos to help anyone out.

The hardest part was spending 1 hour getting the E10 torx screw to come off the bottom of the VRSF charge pipes. Since the VRSF chargepipes are wider than the stock ones, a regular 3/8 E10 socket did not fit.

Yeah. 8mm open end wrench will do the trick.

Ended up using a 10mm 1/4 socket. Surprisingly it worked.

So got the job done today and saved a butt load of money. Total damage was $45 with shipping from FCP for the OE Bosch plugs. Took me about 3 hours because I went in and made sure everything was perfect and I also cleaned it up a bit. Job could've been done in 1 1/2 hours if I just went for it. Car started right up and it feels rejuvenated. I've got a cold start delete with the CS tune and I used to get a rough idle and it would stall if I didn't give it enough revs when leaving cold. Now it idles so smoothly and takes off easily cold. I had about 25k on the old plugs. Overall I'm so happy.

So which plugs from FCP did you purchased? Do you have the link? Did the plugs come pre-gapped?

Thanks

Look up a couple of posts. I posted the link. They're pre-gapped to what's OEM. 0.28 I think. I didn't even check. You're not supposed to gap the OE plugs anyway. Again I've got a CS tune so the NGK's aren't necessary. Took the car out tonight and it felt great. Pulls hard. Can't go wrong with OE.

Sorry for revive this thread.

I noticed ECS tuning listed Bosch OE for $21.95 ea. They generally have very competitive pricing so I am bit confused. Are these the same spark plugs?

I don't think those plugs from ECS are the same as the ones from FCP. I hope the FCP ones are right - it's the same part number as the BMW part except missing an "m" (ZR instead of ZMR). Those FCP ones are what I ordered but I haven't installed them yet:

This is the debate I could never get a resolution to. The ECS ones above are Bosch "high power" which is = to the M version of the part number. The FCP ones are not "high power" and are missing the M in the part number.

Is there a difference…does it matter… nobody seems to know for sure.

There are three spark plugs we use for the S55:
"Stock plugs" are BMW brand part numbers, and marked with the slash M.
"NGK 1-step colder plugs" are …D8S
"NGK 2-step colder flex fuel plugs" are F8S and sold under a BMW part number (don't have handy, sorry).

Use Stockers gapped 0.025", but if tuned use NGK D8S gapped 0.021-22".

Or Google search BimmerPost + silkskbrrrrwhateverF8S and you'll find it in a post my me or CommanderWiggin.

@TopJimmy

Thanks so the Bosch ones missing the M in the part number and are $6.00 each should not be used?

Don't use weird plugs in a $70K car.
Look up your car at FCP Euro and buy BMW or NGK from them. The lifetime replacements far outweigh any other cost saving logic.

Just buy 6 of these NGKs below, less than $15 each. Second time you buy them save the old ones to return and get your money back. Pay with PayPal and they refund your shipping too!

https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/bmw...plug-ngk-96987

Have the gaps set to 0.023" and you're good.
