S62 (E39 M5).
Plastic timing chain guide vanes in the S62. Well documented.

I don't get the whole idea of doing this, please educate me. First of all, why doesn't BMW do a recall on this issue? Why consumers have to do the upgrade themselves at local shops? Does BMW offer this upgrade? Is this a mandatory for S55??

Because the issue is extremely rare on unmodified engines.

Nail on the head. BMW has no reason to fix it given that modified cars are the ones failing 99% of the time.

BMW wouldn't fix it even if it happened on only stock cars. They declined to fix S85 and S65 rod bearing issues which were much more widespread and affected unmodified cars.

I'm actually getting my crank bolt capture installed next week! Yeeee.
Blue clue's M3 spin was actually caught on camera. Fast forward to 7 minutes in the video. From what I gathered in the video his M3 suffered some pretty extensive damage, it was down for over a year..

Blake's Garage spun shortly after he went full E85.
He talks about it a bit here.

My hub spun, yes. My car has been down for over a year not by choice or financial burden. I don't want to bad mouth anyone or mislead people into having a negative opinion on a shop but let's just say, the work is being taken care of now at the price of just parts. After getting the car running again, the car was running really rough. A compression test and leak down rear confirmed a bent valve in cylinder 1. Head is being pulled off Monday and sent to Lang Racing for their stage 1 package. I think that's port and 5 angle job. Car will be back on the road very soon! GET YOUR HUBS DONE IF YOURE TUNED! Lol

Not True, A co-worker of mines M4 Comp (Tuned) had the crank Hub issue and Bmw here in Alabama replaced his engine. Needless to say he got rid of it soon after that.

This.

It took BMW years to even acknowledge the fact that rod bearings were a common premature failure point on all early S54 engines. And still they refused to acknowledge the fact that it was a problem on all S54 engines, not just the early ones.

The Vanos hub issues were discovered after most S54 engines were already out of warranty. BMW never acknowledged this as a problem, even though it was more widespread than rod bearing failure.

Great explanation, thank you so much for the video, and hope things will go well for the M3 after being fixed!

Yeh BMW should take notes on the crank hubs. Cus these are expensive. Hopefully they do a recall. And I get an upgraded crank hub.

First they'll recall all the S54's and S65's for rod bearings issue right? Christmas is coming early!

Well that's stupid.

Only 100% solution: don't buy a S55 motored car. Dodged the S54 bullet by buying my car 3 years earlier. So much for my future M2c. Next.

It happens to n55 engines too. They been pumping these engines since 07 . Just n55 weren't being modify to 450hp. At least the solution we have so far is good for the time being but 20 hrs of replacing ur crank hub is kinda of long. N if it happens twice. More time being without the car.

My N55 is stock so I'll keep my fingers crossed! I'll drive my Corolla (with 245k+ original miles) like I stole it, and my Bmws like a blind grandma.
