When and What Model M Car was your First?

So when did you get your first M car and what model was it?

I’ll start off. The year was 1995 and it was a ‘95 e36 M3 in Dakar Yellow. I was immediately hooked on M cars after seeing a brand new ‘88 e24 M6 in person in 1988 and then getting to drive a track prep’d ‘90 e30 M3 in 1992. I knew then that I’d own a M3 one day as well as own one with a white leather interior. I’ve been fortunate enough to have achieved both of them! I've owned at least one of every generation of M3/4 since the e36 except for the g8x.

The first ever M3 I bought was a 1995 BMW M3 Coupe. Finished in Alpine White with black Vader seats. 5-speed Manual. Bought it January 2023 and then bought an F80 in November 2023. Still have both today.

Nice looking e36! I still have both of my e92 M3s, purchased new in ‘09 and ‘12, and my f82 purchased new in ‘16. The only car I regret selling is my ‘03.5 e46 M3 which I ordered in Imola Red with slick top + Imola red interior with manually adjustable seats. I wish I still had it.

I do somewhere. Most have to be scanned in. I’ll dig around and see what I can find.

My Tanzanite over Silverstone 2015 F80 M3, bought in July of 2018 after it came off lease by one of the Dealership owner's sons. 25K miles, virtually perfect condition. I was 70 at the time. I still have it, now at 43K miles, with several modifications/upgrades.

Yo!

1989 M3. It was the best. The S14 sound was just so intoxicating, and the car is probably the most engaging I have ever owned.

Then the 2015 F80. She is gone but not forgotten. I hope to be back in one in the next few years.

My first ///M car.

I see a lot of E36 owners and I want to ask what the ownership experience is like? I think they are beautiful and obviously lightweight but never had the opportunity to drive one. Any thoughts? I really want one lol.

I haven’t driven one in quite awhile but having previously owned and tracked one, I think I can answer your question. It’s one of the last (it and the e46 M3) Ms that you could truly enjoy and extract almost 100% of its performance on the street without concern for being arrested! The steering is one of the best (s2000 has it beat) I’ve ever experienced with phenomenal feedback and feel. You knew exactly what the tires were doing. I had a ‘95 with the square 235 mm tire setup and the balance was great. Very little understeer especially compared to the newer 225/245 setups on ‘96-‘00 M3s. The engine revved smoothly and had good torque for the gearing and weight. It felt light when cornering and braking. My only complaint was the US didn’t get the euro S50 engine. At least BMW M made up for it with the S54 in the e46 M3.

My 2009 E90 M3 DCT was my first ever M car, had a few non M BMW's before that and was definitely surprised how different an M car feels compared to them (have also owned AMG's and Audi's but always went back to a BMW M).

After that car it has been all M's for my 'fun' cars, #2 2008 BMW E90 M3 6MT, #3 2008 BMW E92 M3 6MT, #4 2017 BMW M2 6MT and current #5 2015 BMW M4 DCT.

Tiny backstory…

Ever since I got to go to Germany when I was 13, I was so into BMWs and M series. I had my eye on owning one.

Had to work my way up from:
-Mazda 3
-mustang GT
-bmw 528i
-is350

Then finally everything aligned and I was able to get my 2016 bmw m4 with 30k miles in August of 23. It is so nice and I remember when I first got to step on it… and was blown away. So many people say this has enough power as it is and I am a firm believer in that. I still haven’t floored it as I am still under a year of ownership.

It sounds so nice now with the AA EL setup and is exactly what I wanted for sound. I am keeping this forever. Maybe down the road I will upgrade to an M5 (I want that 4.4 TT v8 sound). But that is only when me and my girl have kids.

The differences between M and non-M (including M performance cars) is huge and non-M BMW owners don’t believe you when you try and explain it to them. However, just like you found out, once they drive one they immediately become a believer! Non-M BMW’s are still great cars but the true Ms are in a different league.

Exactly! I had the same mindset too, it was a real eye opener when I went from the E92 335 to the E90 M3.

Makes sense why so many non M owners don't think the M car is worth the price if they can just mod their non M.
