PSS replacements

Have 6mm in the front left and 4mm back on the back left on my factory PSS. Would like to try PS4S… what’s the best way to go about this? I don’t really track the car as of now.

Thanks!

Tires aren't measured in mm usually. They are measured in 32nds. 6mm is like between 7 or 8/32nds and 4mm is like between 5/6nds. Mind you new tires is around 9-10/32nds so your tires aren't actually that worn.

I think your rears maybe have another 10Ksh miles and your fronts are good for another 30Kish miles. They still have a lot of life from 2/32nds (legal limit) but I recommend replacing 4/32nds if you encounter rain a lot.

You can try to sell them after you get MSP4s for maybe 100 bucks for all 4.

As N1rve stated, your tires have a lot of tread left, almost equal to new tire tread depth. However, if they’re still your original tires, your tires are close to being six years old. Rubber hardens with time so at six years you’re close to needing to replace tires based on age, not mileage. Check to see if there are any cracks forming around the tire perimeter. I usually change tires between years six-seven, definitely at year eight.

Good point. The age slipped my mind.

Thanks for the comments.

Tires are only like 2-3 years old.

As for the PS4s… is the best thing to do to just wait until the fronts wear and then get all four of the new tires?

Kind of sucks that we have to get different wheels for a square setup.. but I’m gonna stick with the 666m shadows. I’ve always liked the way they look.

Rears wear about 2x quicker so you go through 2 sets of rear tires for each 1 set of front tires. At some point, you’ll have either near new fronts and a completely worn set of rears or new fronts and new rears or completely worn fronts and new rears. It all depends on timing. For example my wife’s f22 240ix has partially worn fronts and brand new rears. However, in her case, a complete car key had penetrated one of her rear tires so we were forced to buy two new rears.

Wow! Close call.

I guess my big question is.. can I put PS4S on the back after the PSS have worn? And can I keep the fronts running PSS in the meantime with the rears having PS4S? Should the tires have to all be the same model in front and rear?

Sorry for the slow response. I didn’t receive a notification for your reply.

Yes. We’ve done this on her f22 m240ix (225 F, 245 R) and our e92 M3 (275 F, 285 R) with PSS on the front and PS4S on the rear. It alters the front and rear relative grip a little but the key is to replace both rears at the same time so the front left-right balance and rear left-right balance are the same.
