'15 F82 M4 Blue smoke when revving??
Hey yall, I’ve got a slightly concerning issue with my F82 and was wondering if anyone has had the same? For reference it’s a 2015 with 90K miles. Stock tune, Stock cats, oil changed every 3k with LM 5W30. Oil consumption is about 1 liter every 3k miles.
I noticed today after letting my car idle for 5-10 minutes waiting to clock out for work that it started to smell like burning oil. The car was up to full operating temp so I decided to rev it to 3-4k RPM. Sure enough a BIG ploom of blue smoke comes out of the exhaust. I revved it again and same thing. Decided to drive it to the other end of my shop to have my coworker rev it for me and yet again, massive ploom of blue smoke. I hoped that maybe it was some sort of residual from idling for so long so I tried it again after about a 5 mile drive home. I revved it once again in my garage and sure enough, nice thick cloud of blue smoke. I’ve only been able to replicate it by revving the car at operating temp, it doesn’t seem to smoke while actually driving from what I’ve gathered. I'm leaning towards the issues being turbo seals but I'm stumped on the fact that my oil consumption isn't all that bad. Ive attached a video (Hopefully it works.) The camera doesn't pick it up all too well and its definitely a lot worse looking in person. Any input is greatly appreciated, Thank you! |

Also forgot to mention, The valve cover was replaced at BMW about 9k miles ago so ive ruled out PCV being a potential issue. Heres a link to the video of it smoking incase it didnt work. https://youtube.com/shorts/UjrpHfBL9So?feature=share

Blue smoke indicates oil getting into the combustion chamber. It's either piston rings or valve seals - or, possibly oil vapor from PCV getting into intake tract despite valve cover replacement.

Ive come back with a little bit more info on my issue. The car will not smoke when revved if it is cold. I started the car after sitting for hours, allowed the car to idle for 2-3 minutes and revved it to 3-4k rpm like before. No smoke whatsoever. Ive got the car on a lift and the only small leak/wetness I can find is from my front turbo where the inlet meets the front of the turbo housing probably due to the infamous rubber inlet o-ring (Please correct me if im wrong.) Ive tried duplicating the issue while driving but to no avail. Its seems that the ONLY way to get the car to smoke is to rev it AT OPERATING TEMP. As much as i would like to simply brush it off, it is a fairly large amount of blue smoke. I got a better video of it this morning and will post the link here.

Heres a better video that accurately captures how much smoke is coming out. I talked with my foreman a bit and we're leaning towards the problem being the turbos as it only happens at operating temp aswell as no smoke at idle or during normal driving conditions. Even had a buddy watch my exhaust as I was driving. https://youtube.com/shorts/WJ0Ic1D1AUs?feature=share

Idling a performance gasoline engine for that long is not good for the engine.
